Lotte and Friedrich had ZERO CHEMISTRY

the characters are well acted although friedrich came across as creepy and both selfish. but yeah hall/madden had zero chemistry. i kept thinking if only they cast hayley atwell instead opposite madden, or another actor opposite hall.

To my eye, Rebecca Hall seemed vibrant and passionate and like a person about to burst out of her skin with emotional conflict.

Madden seemed like a stick.

That's pretty much how I felt. Rebecca Hall was very good, but Richard Madden didn't hold up his end.

It's clear the lovers were miscast, as they simply had no chemistry together. Nor did their acting rise, pardon the pun, to the level required of them. Rickman was too good, if that makes sense, his actions came off as too "passionate" - something that should have been demonstrated with a more emotional Friedrich. I would have cast a colder husband, someone like Donald Sutherland, and the lovers with two actors with whom you could palatably feel their yearning, like a few famously forbidden lovers as in the English Patient or the Last Mohican. Even the lovers in Room With a View had more chemistry.

Whaaat? I felt lots of supressed feelings there lots. To me casting a colder husband would have been a mistake.
