Was his character intended to be portrayed as slow/mentally retarded?

Really captivating movie, all-in-all, some of the best use of audio effects to compliment a story in recent memory.

No, I think that was not the intention. Probably an inexperienced actor, I don't know...

I think he was supposed to be a not very bright, somewhat screwed up rich kid. We learn that he might have had a drug and crime problem in the past, but given his family's wealth, he's now in school. I thought the actor playing him captured this type quite well.
