Mei Lin

In a show of mostly bad people doing bad things, I found myself having so much sympathy for Mei Lin. She was just as ruthless as the others (if not more so), but her motivation was mostly "I want to get my daughter and get the f*@% out of Dodge." I see Mei Lin as someone who has spent practically her whole life doing whatever she's had to to get by, and apart from her daughter, has never allowed herself to get close to anyone. If there's another season, I wonder what they'll do with her?

YES! She's a consummate survivor. I love, though, that the writers finally gave her a powerful moment at the end of the Season 2. Those hints throughout the season that Ahmad was falling in love with her felt a little bit like the writers were trying to win our sympathy for him -- in spite of his treason. It felt so right to me that she ended the season by telling him in no uncertain terms that she would never reciprocate his love, just as she demonstrated that she can play the manipulation game just as well as he could.

If there's another season, I'd like to see more of Mei Lin and Lotus. The writers drew some interesting parallels between them -- both Chinese, both female warriors, both loyal (in their own way) to the Song dynasty, and both protectors of children. The friendship between them (and Ling Ling) seems to be the only non-destructive female-female relationship in the show.
