Why so expensive?

Loved this show, but how could the cost to make this show be so astronomical? It's not even filmed in actual Mongolia as I understand it.

I for one would be fine with not showing 10,000 real horse riders. Or whatever makes it cost so much. I'm still a bit baffled about how it can be so expensive to make. It's not like they're riding around on dinosaurs.
