Music Choice

Some of the tracks, particularly the more folky or orchestrated of them are quite good, but you can certainly leave it up to American producers to put in some extremely inappropriate and incongruous rock and roll during the stallion fight. I like how the list every US state that the Rockies touch without mentioning any Canadian provinces. At least they're acknowledging the age of the planet as I half expected they would avoid.

Ain't no BBC documentary, that's for sure.

I'm curious as to why you half expected them to avoid talking about the age of the planet.

reply

Perhaps they were hinting that, since they seem to be targeting a predominantly American audience, they might be concerned about stirring up a bit of controversy in the Bible Belt. That's the only reason I can think of.

reply

That's what I was wondering and its a shame because that's a fairly common stereotype. The fact is that very few, even in the Bible Belt, disagree with the scientific estimation of the age of the earth. I suspect there are more who believe Christians think that way than there are Christians who actually believe that the earth is only 5,000 years old.

Rolling stones for the midwest weather was great

I agree. I thought that Gimme Shelter really fit.

I loved "Wild Thing" during the snake orgy and Etta James's "At Last" during the hummingbird courtship. I don't think a little humor diminishes the quality of the show.

I agree I hate the soundtrack this time.

Rock music has no place in a documentary of this calibre. Especially the poor choice of the worst kind of bubblegum pop.
It cheapens and ruins the whole thing for me.

I have been so looking forward to this programme airing - but I can't watch it.
David Attenborough would never have devalued such wonderful film work this way.

reply

ditto, the music is horrible.i fast forward past it.this is supposed to be a documentary not music video's.

reply

I disagree about the entire rock genre not fitting into this. There is plenty of rock music that is perfect for nature documentaries, though almost none of it is considered to be popular music today. They should definitely avoid using modern popular rock bands as most of them aren't very good.

Sure, there are a number of tracks that do not fit at all and just aren't very good, the 30 Seconds To Mars opening for example was totally out of place. However, some of the rock music they used fit perfectly and didn't cheapen the documentary at all. The Lenny *beep* track during the lightning storms is a good example, as was the Rolling Stones song.

Edit: Why the hell does IMDB consider Kra.vitz as an expletive?

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
