Norman and Norma

Who do you like better? Me personally, I'm a Norma fan, but just vent about your hate or love for them below.

I loved Norma. She was versatile and interesting character who had great character development in serie. It was so nice to see how she finally found love in serie, found love with similar broken soul like Alex was and how they were happy together. She will be missed.

Sorry Josh, but I'm not taking that bait.

Let me pose a different question: Suppose Norma had not fallen in love with Romero...suppose she found a way to get insurance for Norman on her own, (e.g., found a full time job, but remained single an unattached while Norman was in Pineview) and never hooked up with Romero. But all the other events (including her death) remained the same.

Would any of you who profess to love her character so much still love her as much?

IMO the real tragedy is Norman. Good kid who didnt want to hurt anybody but was cursed with a terrible ilness and a bad mother. I understand finding Norma entertaining she definetly is BUT she isnt a good person

reply

I honestly would. I haven't even finished watching season four yet, I already loved her in seasons 1-3, but I know that she isn't a good person whatsoever, really none of them are. And like, my favorite character is Dylan, but he doesn't get any hate (of course) so this is why I'm kind of defending Norma, bc she's getting a lot of hate which I don't think she deserves all that much. And I'm really starting to see what's being said about norman, I'm liking him a little more now.

Really? I don't see that - I think she's one of the most loved characters on BM. I love the character, find her rather sympathetic, and at the same time enjoy watching her, but I don't idolize her; I duly note her flaws and her role in Norman's issues.

On the flip side, I notice that certain people who idolize Norma tend to demonize Norman, and that makes very little sense to me, since they are very similar characters with tragic backstories, and a unique bond between the two of them.

Agreed most love norma and hate norman for reasons other than the narrative. Vera is my favorite actress and norma is interesting. I sympathize with her childhood BUT instead of learning from it she caused pain to her kids. Yes she loved norman but she has basically ruined his life which is tragic because he is a good kid despite what NORMERO people say

I sure would! The most interesting thing about her, to me, was her character development, and the way she was both written and acted.

We already knew Norman from the film. And for those who read the book, from that as well. But we didn't know Norma except as a corpse in a rocking chair, and the effects her "mothering" had on Norman.

I didn't know what to expect, how they'd portray Norma, and I think they did a brilliant job with her! They could have gone the easy route and simply made her a monster. But no, they made her multi-dimensional, so at times you liked and felt sympathetic towards her, and at others hated her. On top of that, they have her a lot of *great* comedic lines!

I liked their Norman, and did a great job of updating him yet still honouring his original character. But he wasn't as compelling a character as Norma. Not that I think they should have written him any differently. It worked very well.

Although she was one of the most frustrating characters on TV and the architect of her own downfall in a lot of ways, I stil, preferred Norma to Norman. I couldn't help rooting for her and Romero to live happily ever after, even though I knew it was doomed, and even though Norma was kind of an awful person who treated one of her sons like dirt and let the other one literally get away with murder.

Freddie does a fine job portraying the intensity and the psychosis within Norman but for me, he is not as multi-layered a character as Norma was. Nor is he as fun to watch. JMO.

I love them both and they both should've gotten help but then we wouldn't have the rest of the series.

I would say Norma. I do like Norman but Norma is just one of the best characters on tv. She's crazy, frustrating, sweet, funny, and beautiful. I cried like a baby when she died, and never thought Norman would kill her that way. Vera does such a fantastic job portraying her.

Very nice words! :)

I love them both and find them both interesting, but if I have to choose, I'd go with Norma. She's so nuanced. One minute you want to smack her, the next you want to cry for her. Props to Vera Farmiga's acting! She humanizes a character that, going by the movie Psycho, one would think would be vile.
