Is the main character, the man, meant to be sympathetic? Or nasty?

In your opinion, is the main man in this film, who is the main character following the two teenage girls, is he meant to be sympathetic, or unpleasant, a victim, or a potential threat/perpetrator, were we meant to feel sorry for him or that he deserves whatever bad that happens to him?

Or maybe a strange mixture of all those categories? (Apparently, he even gets sexually assaulted by a woman (!) who is like some kind of Disney witch, right? And what did you think of that scene?)

And was his following of the two teenage girls in any way what it may seem or was he NOT in any way, er, sexually attracted to them?
