Why did not he finish the job?

Very much liked the ending, why didn't he kill the wife and that pervert as well? That was a very demented family...

How was the wife and daughter demented? He didn't kill the others because you can visibly see he was not about that life.

He was distressed. Hell bent on revenge, he never expected the gun to go off and when it did he realizes that he is no better than Ilya.

Come at the king, you best not miss.

Watched this movie again today, still liking it except the ending..
How was he the same as Iliya? He just gave him a taste of his own medicine, isn't this how justice system works? An eye for an eye? He was not doing any of that for pleasure unlike the sick Iliya, but as a part of his vengeance. In fact I am sure Chris hated any second of it, but it had to be done.

I am sure Iliya's wife was very much aware of who her husband was - a sick sadist, rapist and murderer. Daughter, not sure about, but being naive and ignorant does not make her an angel either, and she was just a collateral. Anyway I felt no sympathy for any of them.
Chris was just not prepared enough for what he was about to undertake and closing scene looks pathetic. I am not even sure what director was trying to say there, the point got lost with too many ideas running through out the film.

Anyway this is still a good watch :), reminded me of Funny Games a bit

I disagree about the wife and daughter. Many sociopathic personalities lead double lives and fool those closest to them. It happens all the time.....and that does seem to be the case here. I don't think they had a clue. Just knowing the guilty party does not make someone guilty by association. That's illogical lazy thinking.

The wife and daughter were complete innocents and Chris's method of revenge made him no better than Illya. That's the irony of the movie is that he becomes like the thing he most hates. That's what mindless revenge usually accomplishes.

The eye for an eye type of revenge where you kill collaterally and viciously is an empty banal revenge that brings no satisfaction. It's the teeth of terrorism and endless empty wars that go on forever.
That's the point...if there is one to be made.
Chris realizes this too late when the damage has been done and he's gone too far.

If he'd wanted his revenge to have any point at all he would have taken out only the guilty culprit of Illya to at least insure Illya do no one else any harm. And then walked away.
Then he would've been understood and sympathetic and even honorable.

While you are right about sociopathic/psychopathic personalities leading double lives, their loved ones in almost all cases will try to protect them.
Richard Kuklinski's wife claimed she also did not know what was going for 30 years or so, but do you really believe that?
Obviously it was not the first time Illya had done something like this and his wife was aware, you can even tell by how she reacts to his anger during the dinner scene (when Adam is asked to leave). She starts supporting Illya right away without questioning and senses that something very bad is about to happen and why.

Daughter got shot accidentally, I don't think that was in his plans. Then again Adam was not prepared enough.

He shot at her like ten times how was this not his plan???

The ending is open, we don't see Chris killing them both, but he might have. He wanted revenge and got carried away, he didn't expect to go over the edge. Killing the daughter was mistake he never thought he will make. But once he stepped over the edge and he is now in free fall, he could kill them too. I think it is not a matter of revenge anymore, it is just mercy at this point. Leaving them alive will be much crueler than to kill them and spare them the suffering. I think since Chris realized he went too far he will kill them, I don't think he is so cruel to leave them alive.

reply

Why not...... leave Illya to suffer as he suffered, after losing someone he loved to death. The wife's grief and hate of the fat f__would inflict further suffering on Illya also. The only reason he might kill them is to protect himself from being arrested. Chris is more likely to kill himself at this point after he actually did murder, but alas he had used the only bullit in the gun already. I think that was supposed to be the high point of the movie - his surprise that the gun actually fired and killed the girl - and that revenge even for such horrible acts can backfire badly. A more palatable ending may have been that he extracted his revenge over a longer period of time, then left the family ravaged as he walked away, leaving Illya unable to bring in the authorities without having to fess up to his dreadful deeds which led up to all this (the same reason he didn't follow through with his 221 call after Chris arrived)..... Shame and Guilt.

A very frustrating movie from the get go unfortunately :( ...... imo.

I would have most certainly killed the rapist but spared mother and daughter but not before telling them what a sick *beep* he was and my reasons for killing him and terrorising them.

reply

Was the fact that the guilty man was spared and the daughter killed by Chris, even if "accidentally" but not before being horribly messed around and terrorized, meant to be some kind of special comment and how, unfortunately, in matters like these, rarely are JUST the guilty parties being punished?
