Chris sort of brought it on himself...

Alicia begged him not to tell Daniel about their fling. She BEGGED him not to. But he still did. And she pegged the reason early on - he wanted to tell Daniel so he would break up with Alicia and he could swoop in.

So in a way, Chris caused the while thing. If he had only honored Alicia's pleas instead of wanting to break up his best friend's marriage so he could bang his fiancée, everything would be different.

reply

Agreed. Which is why he caused his vengeance. He was also a selfish douche.

Glad I'm not the only one! Guy wanted his best mates girlfriend and did everything he could to break them up. I'm actually watching the movie at the moment and I'm tempted to stop watching now he is with the guys family. I know exactly what will happen and I am not sure I want to see the a-hole get his "revenge"....

I thought Alicia and the rapist's family were the only sympathetic characters in the whole scenario.

reply

Yes and he ended up shooting Alicia, would have been better if he took the risk to shoot the rapist before he committed the sin. Or better still jump off, take the risk.

Given that it is implied that Chris confessed to Daniel while he was standing on the landmine, then "in no way" is Chris's confession the cause of the "whole thing". Unbeknownst to Alicia and Chris, Daniel most likely knew before the trip that the two had slept together. During the campfire the night before, Daniel makes a scene calling out Chris, almost inviting him to confess, to reveal what was bothering him, but Chris plays it off. The landmine was premeditively placed in the ground for Chris to step on. While holding the camera, Daniel's Georgian friend helped guide Chris to the landmine by repeatedly telling the three friends to move up and to the side. Daniel was clearly aware of the landmine, by pulling out the landmine' pin. Daniel was clearly intent on scaring Chris and Alice with the fake landmine, because of this, he was the cause of the "whole thing."
