who would make a landmine that goes off after you step off of it?

Seriously... there is no reason to make a landmine that doesn't go off the second you step on it.

They made a movie around the dumbest trope in the world.

Well, i don't claim to know the first thing about landmines, but it supposedly got "armed" after Chris stepped on it. The jealous boyfriend pulled the pin out and just "maybe" a mine doesn't explode when clicked unarmed ???

Any experts here to clear this up ?

claymores are pressure sensitive

Wasn't that the point? Ilya tells Chris 'you watch too many movies, they don't work that way', because a lot of people would think that. Hell, I didn't even think about it until after watching this movie because I've only ever seen it in movies.

Because many mines jump up in the air before they explode, and that doesn't go so well if someone is still standing on it.

reply

Actually they go off shortly after being activated. I've dealt with landmines in the service and I can't recall any that don't activate immediately or delay a few seconds after you step on it.

If you look at the wiki for the original bouncing betty you can see for yourself...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-mine

why would someone make something that triggers on release of the trigger? It's another mechanical failure waiting to happen. unnecessarily complicated and why give someone an opportunity to react to a mine? It's much more efficient to wound soldiers and slow the group to take care of the person wounded or killed.

It makes no sense and almost no mines "click" and wait for you to step off of it... it's a false and stupid TV trope.

reply

Specifically under the wiki for the bouncing betty.....

A common misconception prevailed that the S-mine would not detonate until its victim stepped off the trigger. This fallacy was propagated by incorrect United States propaganda during World War II. The mine would detonate whether the trigger was released or not. Standing still or attempting to run from the S-mine would be equally dangerous. The most effective way to survive the mine's detonation would not be to flee but to fall to the ground lying face down as quickly as possible.

I was born and raised in Germany where we still have UN-exploded mines in some areas of the country left over from WWII, I am also a MD (I worked with mine victims from Bosnia during medical school and for volunteer work and school credits etc) and have 2 brothers and other family and friends who are in the German or US military as I am married to a Yank 😊. I also studied or minored in military history as well.

Anyway no you are wrong there are many types of mines with all types of detonation standards etc. Now I don't claim to be an expert like so many web commando's do. But what I have heard from the injured of mine blasts from all over the world and from my family and friends who are or were in the military many fought wars from WWII to Iraq and Afghanistan. Some mines could be old and do some of the weird stuff you see in films.

But a few mines do exactly like this one did and one is called the "Bouncing Betty" as after it is stepped on it will pop up to waist height or about a meter high and explode. So yes there types of mines that do NOT explode the second its touched or stepped on.

PS: Again this movie stunk also the mine they showed looked more like 1950's type vehicle mine than a AP (anti personnel) mine.

I never revisit posts. Too busy and mature to argue.

First.... bouncing betty's don't trigger when you step off. They trigger when you step on them. They trigger and then a few seconds later they try to launch up and then exploded. If you happen to be standing on it, it will still try to launch and then detonate.

Second... I linked to the betty and the wiki specifically mentions the false idea that mines detonate when releasing. No one makes a mine like that. It's stupid and makes no sense.

third... It's a television trope. It's not true. 99.999999% of landmines go off or trigger the second you step on them and blow immediately or after a few seconds.

Last... LAND MINES DETONATE WHEN YOU STEP ON THEM. Sure there might be some obscure or extremely basic or old landmines that triggers when released, but landmines go off when you step on them. Regardless of what you "feel" about how they work.

Lol " Web commandos". Awesome.

But too childish to admit when you're wrong.

They addressed this in the film...

What's going on? What's all this shouting? We'll have no trouble here...
