I don't understand why she didn't just leave him entirely and go off with Gilbert. One would think taking cyanide on your wedding day would indicate that you weren't happy. It looks like they never consummated their vows, so did they not have annulments in those days? Or was Florence, like some others have said, mentally unstable.

If this was fiction..you could say the whole plot is laughable. But if these are actually the facts as they happened, then fact is definitely stranger than fiction.
