30,000 lost children and no one's looking for them.

Really? No one? Not one member of law enforcement, not one family member, not one missing persons advocacy group?

Hyperbole in the name of getting attention. Now that's a crime.

"You liked Rashomon."
"That's not how I remember it."

Wow!! Just like in the play! (Actually, I think Willie Wonka was creepier. At least the wolf was written that way.)

reply

What about the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? Talk about a creepy character!!

reply

Yeah. Back in the old days they weren't afraid to write characters who were creepy pedophiles. These days, Johnny Depp's performance offends people who are too modern to appreciate old school creepiness.

reply

It made perfect sense, and if the movie had not been intended for family viewing he probably would have been creepier (apparently in keeping with the play)... and that would have been ok.

reply

He scared the living eff out of me! I watched a show about musicals and I think they said he was the number one villain in musicals that scared children. (The original Oompa Loompas could have sent me running too). That was back in the day when actors did things like take their teeth out to be uglier. Now actors can have any sort of teeth made for them and all sorts of plastic surgery. The guy who played the child catcher was actually pretty homely anyway.

Well funnily enough the Character of 'The Wolf' is a pedophile. Obviously it has been toned down some what by Disney from the original stage representation but Mr.Depp must have done something right if he gave you that impression with his performance.

Here's something I read a while back which should shed some light on things.

So how did the Disney release specifically handle Depp and Crawford's sexualized song?

"Delicately, very delicately; we were aware of the implications," producer John DeLuca told The Hollywood Reporter at the film's premiere earlier this month. "And we really wanted to hire kids on this — you don’t do that onstage, they're [usually] older. ... So we just found our way, not making it too heavy on the pedophilia front."

When he made that comment about her being "plump", it creeped me the hell out. Totally innapropriate scene and dialouge.

Accept what is, let go of what was, have faith in what will be

Shut up and get your mind out of the gutter, troll.

This element of the piece was always the reason why I thought 'Into the Woods' would never make it to a film adaptation.

In the original stage version the actor who plays 'The Wolf' also plays 'Prince Charming'. If you notice in the film, Prince Charming doesn't appear until after the Wolf is dead. This is due to the staging (of the same actor always playing both roles).

The predatory aspect of the wolf works well on stage, because the actress who plays Red Riding Hood is always in her later teens early 20's. It's then really interesting, as there is an uncomfortable aspect when you see Prince Charming that you (as the audience) are reminded of the Wolf, so when this character becomes a cad later on it makes sense. Having an older actress playing Red Riding Hood enables the sexual aspect between she and the Wolf to be played up. It is worse on stage. The lyrics still remain in the film, with Red Riding Hood describing to the Baker how she was 'Excited by the Wolf!'.

However, when they came to make this picture the Wolf and Red Riding Hood caused major problems when it got to physically rehearsing the scenes. You then had Johnny Depp being asked to leer and salivate over a child! The original young girl cast for the role was taken out of the project by her parents as they felt it just looked wrong!!

When I watched it (as good as Johnny Depp looked and was) I did wonder why Disney didn't play it 100% safe and actually use Depp but overlay a CGI wolf. This would have removed any of the pedophile subtext. Depp's make-up just made him look like a creepy man wondering around the forest and whilst the intention in the stage version is very much this, it was a big gamble to leave that one in. Nobody could have been expected not to be a little disturbed by it in a PG film!

reply

The vast majority of children who can't handle PG-13 won't see the pedophilic angle. They'll just see him as the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood who wants to eat. It's the children much closer to 13 year-old who may get both meanings. Hopefully they're old enough to handle it.

reply

Agree. Also what made it worse on stage was that in the Original Broadway production, the wolf's costume was anatomically correct. It was disgusting! That's all you could see the whole number, if you were there live in the theatre on the first five rows, was his genitals. Awful. I felt it was handled much better in the film but would have preferred a CGI version.

reply

Never did I view him as a pedophile. He's a wolf, he's hungry and he's singing about it.

reply

Same. Though because Depp looked more human than wolf to me, he came off as a cannibal for a moment. I thought he might've been a man in a wolf costume and wasn't sure if he was supposed to be an actual wolf-wolf

reply

agreed. such a pedo.

reply

Actually, having seen the stage musical (on video) I appreciated they didn't show the Wolf with an "extended appendage", but I thought Depp's costume was out of keeping with the rest of the film. It just looked too "stagy" to me. Maybe they should have made him CGI.

reply

In the stage show, riding hood is older and there is an intentional sexual tension between the wolf and the girl. In fact, they filed it down for the Disney version.

Excuse my English please, not a native speaker.

reply

His role as the big bad wolf would have seemed normal if he was in his truer 'wolf' form than a human which makes him seem like a pedophile.

Nothing like a nighttime stroll to give you ideas.
