How good are the songs?

I don't really watch musicals and when I was younger I remember always thinking "oh god, another song" when I'd watch those animated movies with occasional singing in them. But I did really like Pitch Perfect which is what brought me here (from Anna Kendrick's IMDB page). Should I give this movie a shot, is it similar to Pitch Perfect's quality of music or is it just generic songs like the old animated stuff?

For me they are very memorable. I grew up with this play and I thought everyone did a great job in this movie!!

This is my first experience of watching this musical so I'm not too sure if I will come to like the songs or not. Some of the lyrics are terrible EG "just remember when you've had an and, when you're back to or makes the or more."

That lyric is "Just remembering you've had an 'and' when you're back to 'or' makes the 'or' mean more than it did before." I find that to be one of the more brilliant lyrics in the show. The triple rhyme, the summation of her thought process so succinctly, the stinging tragedy of what she learns about herself only when it's just too late. I think that "Moments in the Woods" is one of the best female musical theatre songs ever written.

The music and lyrics were written by the prolific, amazingly talented, witty, and insightful god of Broadway musicals, Stephen Sondheim. Need I say more?

Well, I suppose I do after reading a couple of the stupidest comments on this thread used to describe his music I have ever seen. "Old fashioned Disney, fun songs?" And the one misquoting one of the greatest lyrical twists of his career in "Moment in the Woods." I mean really? That entire song is lyrical gold, especially the second part sung by the baker's wife. Not just because of the "twists," but for the truth in it.

Nuff said. Except that if you are looking for "fun Disney songs" you'd best look elsewhere, because in this musical, as in all of Sondheim's work, you will not only find his usual gorgeous and complex music, but you will also learn some deep lessons about life in general in his lyrics.

I just posted in regards to that "Moments in the Woods" lyric that was clearly misunderstood. I grew up with this score and these are still songs that move me no end. I wept the first time I saw the movie in the theatre, and I re-watched it on DVD just a few days ago and wept again.
