Other Swedish/Scandinavian Shows?

I wholeheartedly enjoyed Real Humans, and am eagerly anticipating the second series which is to be aired fall 2013. Now I am wondering if anyone can recommend any more excellent series from Sweden, or other Scandinavian countries?

The Killing, The Bridge, Wallander, and of course The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo film trilogy are a few I've heard of. But I'm not only interested in thrillers, so don't hesitate in suggesting any series (or film) that fits your definition of 'quality'!

;-)

Jokes aside there are nothing else. But there are some good quality movies from Denmark and Norway though.

Others to look put for in the Nordic Noir Genre are two Danish Series - The Eagle & Unit One, both police/crime dramas similar to those mentioned. Borgen, a political drama is also great. Of course The Girl with The Dragon trilogy (both Swedish & American versions).

reply

Completely agree with lpatrick. Unit One and The Eagle were among the 1st Danish series that I watched and I loved both. of more recent vintage, I'd strongly suggest Danish historical (ca.1947) noir Edderkoppen (The Spider.) Of course Borgen is exceptional. The linked Swedish series The Grave (Graven) and Murder (Morden) with unusual locations and shared characters are worth looking in to.

... and Mads Mikkelson films are often interesting, eg. 'After the Wedding'.

You have to see Jagten(The hunt) which is funded by Denmark and Sweden like many other Scandinavian films. It certainly has that feel of originality even though the plot is about a common subject in society.

So look It up!
You should Watch Molanders too if you can because its such a wonderful series

Some of these are "classics" and others are popular series in Sweden. Not all of them are particularly fantastic but they are definitely different and has a certain "swedish-series"-feel.

But other than that I think you should check out Lukas Moodyson's and Ingmar Bergman's movies!

reply

Like mentioned, Lukas Moodysson does good stuff, with my favorite being "Together".

The Norwegian film "Max Manus" is a good one.

If you enjoy stuff like Wallander, check out Norwegian "Varg Veum".

If you are interested in some modern twisted Swedish comedy, I highly recommend "Grotesco", but I don't know if you can come across it with english subtitles...

"Stockholm boogie" is kind of an instant classic for the younger generation of Swedes.

This is just what came to mind quickly.

Late respond... "Anno 1790"(2011), "De drabbade"(2003)"Ivar Kreuger"(1998, "Tusenbröder" (2002-2003) might be worth checking out

reply

Oh, I loved "De drabbade!"
Such a weird little gem by the creative team behind "Bron/Broen".
Too bad it's not available for purchase anymore.
Hopefully, SVT will add the show to their open archive (Öppet arkiv) sometime soon.
