He obviously saw all these people that saw his confrontation with Brian that day and knew Brian would have phone records of him talking to "Katie", it was obvious he'd be the prime suspect and get caught. Did he take that camping trip just to try to make up an alibi of where he was, or was that just his finale horrah before going to jail?

I have the feeling it was the latter. I think he was just trying to spend what he knew would be his last weekend as a free man with his family.

I think it was his final horrah. He even said to his wife "I want us to be together again just once" to convince her to go.
She didn't get the significance because she didn't know what he'd done, but it seemed pretty obvious to me.
