I know! It's utterly crazy. he got pretty caught up in his alter ego and so did the fake "Jessie". It's kinda like how people get obsessed with role playing their character in those MMORPG online games (Like "World of Warcraft"). They live through the character they created because their real life isn't exciting enough.
