Am I The Only One Who Did Not Like This?

I normally love these type of indie coming-of-age films like Stand By Me and The Way Way Back. With that said, this film just really irritated me. Two of the main actors were pretty bad and sounded incredibly wooden. Didn't help that the dialogue was weak. Tone is all over the place and a lot of the humor didn't work. It kept trying to come across as a slice-of-life teen drama, but was way too Hollywood-ized with unrealistic characters and events. Also, there were enough musical montages in this film to make Zach Braff blush.

I'm really shocked it's rated so highly.

Disagree. The actors were top noch. I dont know how old you are but a lot of how they behaved and spoke was pretty spot on. Sure its a little hollywoodized (the way way back wasnt? Come on, that had cliches all over the place) but the way it portraied youth and friendship was what really spoke to me. I had the same problem as the main character, so maybe thats also a reason why it resonated so well with me.

So no problem at all then, besides the attitude one?

More like an interest in a girl, which was destroyed by the involvement of a different individual

No, I hated it too. Hugely over rated and with no likeable leads.

I hated it, can't believe the high praise to be honest. And the comparisons to Stand By Me are a joke. This film is supposedly about three 15 year old lads heading off to bond and "come of age" and yet there is not one scene where we see them talking and revealing anything of their desires, hopes, dreams or the like to each other except for the odd-token scenes which were frustratingly played for comedic effect (Joe and Biaggio and the gay/cystic fibrosis chat).

No depth whatsoever and a totally unrealistic and implausible plot, it was actually hard to stay with to the end (typical "Hollywood" ending) and I can't imagine ever wanting to see it again. Some talent in the cast and it's very well shot but with these teen/coming of age movies it has got to be about the writing and character development and this film fails miserably on both accounts.

Desperanto spoken here...
