On "The Smell of Us"
Hi there,
Someone suggested me to tell something about the film, as it has only been released in France about 4 weeks ago.
Well, as I guess you've heard "The Smell of Us" is a french film. The production is french as it is the spoken language. Curiously, Larry Clark doesn't speak a word of french.
The film talks about youth, of course, Parisian skaters indeed. They do what young people do in Larry Clark's movies, that's not really new. What makes this film unique in Clark's cinematography is the fact that during the movie this youth is constantly faced to old bodies, and that makes "The Smell of Us" a story (very fragmented, not linear at all) that talks more about the aging author that the young protagonists themselves. It's maybe his most personal film and Larry Clark himself plays two difficult roles, one specially shocking. Some people may see it as his last film.
The film is great, totally crazy. Stéphane Delorme, one of the main critics of "Cahiers du Cinéma", says in his critic that "The Smell of Us" carries the truth of an emotion, that when you watch it you tell you "that's why I go watching movies". It's kind of a wild film that could only be created by a free soul, someone who doesn't give a *beep* about what people think about him.
I tried not to spoil the film and I guess I got it. Hope you guys could watch it soon.
