Carousel Shootout

That was pretty bad TV.

Many questions popped up during the shootout. Main one being who signed off on this action sequence.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

reply

It was by far the worst thing this show has done.

Terrible terrible action sequence.

Introduce a little anarchy, you upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos

reply

It was so bad, I wonder if it was Frank Darabont's intention to have an action sequence mirror the bad film noir action sequences of the 40's.

reply

I'm actually willing to believe that theory. It was just too lame for that not to be the case.

reply

Didn't want it to be as bad as you all indicated, instead it was worse.
The cop rolls up on the scene with his headlights on and then LEAVES them on as he pretends he's being all stealthy on foot.
Have my own story about that particular carousel, but not enough decades have passed for me to tell it.

reply

Lol guess i clicked on the wrong thread i thought it was pretty cool, rolling under the horses and such

Come on, you apes! you wanna live forever?

reply

I was thinking the same thing...that whole scene seemed like they were going for epic and instead just epically misfired lol thankfully the lawyer guy and Sid have been keeping me entertained

that Mickey/banana scene was pretty stupid too lol a bunch of goons firing tommy guns at...bananas...I get its supposed to be sending a message to their rival or w/e but still stupid lol

reply

Yeah the banana shoot out was a little too long lol. It reached spoof status pretty quickly. Especially when the one dude was all "grrrrrr" lol.

reply

The Banana Massacre scene was comedy gold! I was laughing for like 5 minutes after that...

Nah, that was pretty sweet. Stop trying to be the hipster reviewer everyone and admit you liked it.

You don't need a million dollars to do nothing, man.Take a look at my cousin:he's broke, don't do *beep*

reply

I found myself laughing during the carousel scene, it almost achieved spoof degree of camp.

I'm glad there are only 2 more episodes, I've been ridiculously disappointed in this series.

reply

This doesn't strike me as some alternative opinion. I think it was done decently, but the situation is too stupid to disregard. no one would ever have a shootout on a carousel. Unless there was a shark-filled moat around it. Strangely that would be easier to take seriously.

reply

Seemed like the editor(s) on up to the TNT net execs were asleep on this one.

reply

Speaking of "camp" that desert scene made me think the writer and director couldn't decide if they were doing a youToob spoof of "Casino" or just a generic mob-spoof.

Played entirely for comedy? Really?

By the way: Robert DeNiro called, Bugsy. He wants his suit back.

reply

Not to mention, that body looked pretty intact when they were done with it. I can't believe how many of them missed.

And that one guy strafing the pit with his revolver. I don't think the guy tied up at the bottom is moving around in away that would require him adjust his aim.

reply

It was an homage to Strangers on a Train.

reply

I got that, too. Although the sequence in "Strangers" was scarier, especially when the thing started speeding up. Yikes.

I almost wrote in my earlier message, "Hitchcock did it first and did it better." haha

Wonder where Hitchcock filmed his sequence? Was it also at the Griffith Park carousel?

reply

After Teague leaves his car, he keeps the headlights on, thus exposing himself to the killers.

Teague turns on the carousel and its lights, thus exposing the Busboy to the killers.
As he shoots them, they emit pink cotton candy death poofs.

Bugsy Siegel -
See Sid.

Up on the roof -
They literally drill through the rooftop, confident that they will emerge victorious. The Three Stooges. 'Nuff said.

Captain America -
In his star-spangled uniform ! Captain America (Captain Parker) reminds me of a Wheaties commercial.

Banana Republic -
Hey, those bananas look like they wanna make a move. Open Fire !
Laughing machine gun fire ensues.
Throw in a green banana corn-holed henchman and you've got pure...dunno.

But the Busboy is safe and sound.

Sid Rothman -
A classic bad guy scene stealer. The violin/violence montage was great. As well as the Dracula salute/reference.
Bugsy Siegel -
See Sid. But, Benny's Howling Death Pit was appallingly lousy shooting. At least the concrete worked.

All done in tight shots and short cuts, with no wide angles. In short, a product of budgetary limitations. No one looked at this one on paper and thought it would be a good idea--it was a chase scene that had to be radically cut back.

That was OK for me. I think this scene meant to be shorter but maybe because of budget limitations they had to make it the way we saw it in the episode.

reply

That's because they were defensively trying to sell something that simply couldn't be sold. It was the kind of shootout you'd see in POLICE SQUAD, with both sides taking refuge behind some flimsy damn thing 7 feet apart. Except the joke, there, was intentional.

That scene NEVER should have happened! THREE PROFESSIONAL hitmen can't hit a 60 year old man standing in front o fa tree??? Or get him as he's running from the tree to the carousel???

I nearly fell off my chair laughing.

They sure did silence that tree.

It's a running joke in gangster movies that most can't hit the side of a barn. They even called back to that idea later in the episode. As someone else said, why not just stand outside the carousel (like Joe did to pick off the first guy), and wait for it to come around (even though I'm sure it would be hard to hit a moving target)?
