What does George Takei REALLY think of William Shatner?

Apparently George Takei isn't one to mince words because when he's asked what he thinks of William Shatner he doesn't kid around. Okay, well maybe he does a little bit...

Here's a clip from the Hot Docs film festival, if you're interested...

it's pretty well known that Shatner has always acted like a pompous arse toward his fellow "Trek" cast members. I guess the documentary assumes fans have been hearing that for decades. Plus Shatner's behavior IN the documentary--acting like he's barely acquainted with someone he's worked with on and off since the mid-60s--makes it pretty obvious.

reply

Yeah, "I barely know the guy."
Really? You've known him most of your life. You should be like brothers by now.
Shatner is the kind of person who wants to think he "made it" all by himself with no help from anyone. Sort of like a "star" of a sports team who thinks he's the whole team.

Takei is a "family" guy- we all made it together.

Notice also where Shatner says he was confused why Takei was happy that his character was promoted to Captain in one of the movies. Why would he want to be removed from where "all the action is"?
What he means is "there should only be one Captain among the cast and it should be me."
He's pretty egotistical.

reply

It means Shatner likes being the center of attention and can't imagine why anybody would want to be anything else.

I will gladly count Captain Kirk as one of the biggest heroes of my childhood, but Bill Shatner himself is a pompous, arrogant jackasss.
You never hear stories otherwise. Wouldn't it seem bizarre that ALL these people who have known him for years are simply making up all these things about him? Sad, really.

reply

That's not too far off of what I get from various accounts (including his). And the thing is, he doesn't seem to realize that it bothers anybody. He can't stop thinking of himself long enough to ask, "How is George {or Leonard, or Nichelle, or...} going to feel about this?"

How true is it that William Shatner plays a character? Kind of like Stephen Colbert and Gilbert Gottfried. Rumor has it the Shatner we see is not the real Shatner. Seems like an interesting theory.

While I agree that he likely embellishes it a little when the cameras are around, I don't buy it that he lives his life completely in character. Odds are he's actually just a dick. It saddens me to say that about my captain, but I fear that it is true.

I finished this movie wonder if this is kind of a schtick thing between Takei and Shatner. While the feelings are based in truth to some extent, neither takes themselves SO seriously that they can't play around with their public personas, even to the point of making themselves look somewhat bad. If Shatner truly didn't like Takei, he wouldn't have agreed to be interviewed for this movie. Even the DVD extra where Shatner talks about Takei's apartment was done straight-faced, even though he said everything BUT the fact that the place looked like an obviously gay man's apartment. It was like Shatner was daring us to take him seriously.  I just wonder if both men are playing things up as a way to keep up public interest in both of them. 
