Something I noticed....

There was one thing that I noticed about this film that bothered me in particular.

Being that the documentary was about George the took a great amount of time explaining his experiences in the Japanese-American camps put in place by Roosevelt. Then there was much discussion about the legalizing of gay rights. They showed how George has fought for these causes throughout his life. The theme was people not being judge for either their race, appearance and sexual preference. There was a desire for people to not be mistreated and marginalized by others. Okay! Great! Very noble.

However, when George met Will Wheaton at a convention he brought out the fact that Will had gained weight. Will didn't look particularly impressed with the conversation topic, or the way it was being discussed. Brad called George out on this later, about how he shouldn't do that, and though he knows he shouldn't George doesn't care if it bothers people or not. Then Brad explained that George was vocal about these things when people are overweight.

Hold up....

Don't judge people. Accept people. Love everyone....but judge overweight people. It struck me as extremely hypocritical in some way. It ruined the aspect of not being judgemental of others or make assumptions about people and then .....that.

I was disappointed by George in that scene. I don't think people realize how hurtful those comments can be, and they seem especially willing to direct them at men (in the guise of poking fun). Look, even if you value health and believe people should strive for an ideal weight, it's certainly not your place to shame acquaintances. You have no idea where someone might be on that trajectory; maybe Wil Wheaton had just started a new diet. He certainly doesn't need grief from Mr. Sulu.

Yeah, interesting how the film showed some of his flaws, as well, this way of commenting on people's weight being one of them. He does what he wants and then says "I'm sorry" and does it again, or as his husband replied, "No, you're not." Tactless, but in context of LA and the acting world, I'm sure his way of being about overweight is relatively mild. He's not mean about it, but he gets away with it because of who he is, it seems.

Similarly, his incredibly tactless moment to correct his husband's language use when they are spreading the husband's mother's ashes. Yeah, the film's about Takei, but that was quite a cringeworthy moment.

Loved the film and was extremely touched by his "gaman" or calmness in speaking of the internment. Very effective, articulate and always referring to "civil rights" never "gay rights," as I recall.

I know others who point out people's weight to the point of obsession and are thin themselves. Always hated that and usually call them out on it if I love them otherwise or avoid them if I don't care if they're in my life.
Sometimes when seeing someone for the first time in a while and they say "oh you put on weight"
I reply "ah,so have you" That usually rattles them, but in some cases they go on for a while how fit they are and it's not true.

That's the point in the movie where I realized Takei was human as well.  Not sure if we can compare weight to race or sexual orientation as weight is something we can control, unlike race or sexual orientation. And overweight or obese people have not been historically mis-treated the way other groups of people have been.

I'm not sure if Takei had approval as to what made it into the movie or not. If he had any say and the scene stayed in the movie, maybe he wanted people to be aware of prejudiced behaviour on how it rears it's ugly head in many ways, even to those who have been oppressed themselves.

On the flip side, noting a person's weight gain could be seen as an act of kindness (depending on how it's done...and Takei's way wasn't great) as it could spur someone to make changes to become healthier. Ignoring a problem someone is experiencing is not a kind thing to do. And I say this as a person who is probably obese as far as definitions go.
