Why is this show so racist?

Notice how everybody picks on and abuses the minority, Ming?

reply

They've never made fun of him because of his race, or jokes about it.
I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.

reply

Ya none of them HATE him because of his race, thats what racism is. His race is irrelevant to some of the things he's done in the past that garnered him often being the one joked about. They're friends.

reply

Suggesting that they make fun of him because he's "the minority" makes you a little racist, OP.
I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.

reply

There's always somebody eager to throw around the "racist" card. Themselves either an idiot, a troll or a racist.

Not everything is about race. Look at obamma -- we don't hate him because he's black, we hate him because he's an incompetent fool.

reply

I never said that they call him racist names but out of all the cast, he's the one that's picked on and abused the most by the other three.

Why is that?

reply

Because he's so goofily earnest and dorky?

reply

Because he's so goofily earnest and dorky?

So are the other three guys.

reply

Note the episode where they all abused him while he was wearing speedos.

reply

sparky -- he richly deserved any and all abuse for that. That was totally uncalled for.

He's picked on, not because of his ethnicity, but because he's a bizarre little douchebag.

reply

Seriously? Do you think for one second that wasn't planned? I can't think what is more absurd: ppl who think everything is racist, or ppl who think reality shows aren't planned and scripted. Remember the Hurricane Sandy episode where they walk in on Perez? They are trying to quietly approach him as to not disturb him and he looks surprised to see him. Never mind the big freakin' camera and film crew sitting in front you, look surprised.

Ming wore a speedo all on his own, and it was a big surprised that they trashed him. He had no idea that was coming because he hadn't read the script that said "wear speedo: get made fun of."

I can fully embrace the concept of "suspended disbelief" for entertainment, but reality shows don't ask for such considerations. They tell you this is all real and not made up, so some idiot thinks its racist to make fun of a guy wearing a speedo.

Looks like we can add Walt's wife to the list that is racist towards Mings. These people are disgusting.

reply

How is it racist?

They pick on him because he is the passive, submissive, omega of the group and he can take a joke, not because he's Asian.

If their ribbing was based on his ethnicity, sure, it' racist, but otherwise, it's not. Bry does some potentially racist stuff on the podcast (mainly the Ming voice), but that's not this show.

reply

No, they abuse Ming because they like to abuse and belittle the only minority in the group.

and he can take a joke

It's because he's being paid to put up with the racist abuse.

AgentSparkyX

there is one big problem with your argument... its the hundreds of hours of podcasting that Ming Bry Walt and Mike have done together. these guys have been friends for more than 10 years, their kids play together, they take trips together, they have been through each others ups and downs, deaths in families, marriages, births, depression, drug abuse and recovery, the demise of retail and the rise of Amazon (see also Borders, Waldenbooks, Barnes and Noble, etc), Kovalchuc leaving the Devils, the Great Recession, Hurricane Sandy, and even 9/11.

i only hope that most people could have the kind of friendship these guys have, i think the world would be a better place.

reply

Well explain the attacks and constant degrading name calling on last night's episode!

reply

As an addendum, I see grown men playing with 30 yr old water toys in parking lots all the time. I mean there is no way they did that for comic relief on a tv show. It was totally spontaneous.

reply

sparky -- who exactly accused you of saying they called Ming "racist names"?

I have to agree with pball's assessment of you.

He's younger than the rest of them.

OP you are an idiot. They just pick on him probably because it's fun. There's always one in the group and it's not because you dislike them either. I'm sure Ming is as much of a friend to them as anyone else there.

They pick on him and abuse him. They don't treat him like a friend because they probably don't respect him because typical bigots always belittle the minorities.

reply

And so the disgusting racism and abuse towards Ming continues. People that support this should be ashamed of themselves.

reply

I'm utterly disgusted by the racial abuse in the upcoming new episode.

reply

What a stupid post.

reply

Bryan Johnson is part black.

reply

So? I know a lot of racists that are black.

reply

So Ming is not the only minority, as you previously claimed.

reply

Ming gets picked on and brutally abused by the others on this show because of his short height and dark skin because all the others on the show are racist thugs. You know it and I know it.

reply

If Bryan Johnson is part Black than why on last night's episode did he refer to his kiss with the Black lady from Star Trek as an interracial kiss ?

reply

Because he's also part white.

reply

I don’t know if these guys are racist, but not because I believe that incidents of racism have magically ceased to exist. This is a television show, so these guys could be totally different when they aren’t being recorded and edited for broadcast.

But from my casual viewing of the show I have noticed that they do seem to pile on Ming a lot, especially Walt. I hate to see anyone picked on, and what makes this especially repellent is that this could be real.

On the other hand, if one of the goals of “Comic Book Men” is to show that you can be a geek, a nerd and a *beep* assh*le all wrapped up into one package, they are doing a great job.

reply

Just watched the season opener about the Wookie Call. Very racist and very disgusting.

reply

You're convinced that they're all racists, despite evidence to the contrary. You know what? That's fine. You're obviously a nitwit and maybe a racist yourself, so who cares?

They all ganged up on Ming and told him that he couldn't take care of his kid let alone Gizmo from Gremlins.... insinuating that all dark skinned minorities are dead beat fathers.

Or how about the fact that he's the lowest paid staff/cast member?

Don't let those pesky racist facts get in the way your racist lies.

reply

1) not taking care of his kid's is an inside joke from the podcasts they do
2) Ming is dark skinned?
3) how would you know how much he's paid?
4) Anyone who beats the racism drum for as long as you have, has some level of organic brain damage.

reply

"They all ganged up on Ming and told him that he couldn't take care of his kid let alone Gizmo from Gremlins.... insinuating that all dark skinned minorities are dead beat fathers."

The deadbeat father image applies to Black males, not Chinese males like Ming. The negative stereotype for Ming is that he has a small penis, not that he is a deadbeat father who impregnates as many women as possible and than abandons them.

Most Chinese Americans grow up in a 2 parent household where the father is present.

reply

The OP does have a point. Ming is constantly abused on this show. Even Peter Mayhew picked on him.
