Why do 'Christian' movies have to be so bad?

I so wanted to like this movie.

Having some familiarity with the book, reading the review by "sherrikillamwilliams" as well as the synopsis, to my mind this movie had the potential to be a nice bit of family entertainment with a powerful story.

Then I watched it. Or rather tried to.

I suppose my first mistake was to not investigate the director (or "directors" in this case) -- Dave and Josh Moody, the well-meaning but fairly talentless directors who brought us the cringe-worthy "Praise Band: The Movie".

Look folks, I'm a Christian and proud of it. But when it comes to "Christian" movies, why do they always feel like the end goal was merely to have made a movie for the sake of being labeled "Christian"? Movies must tell a compelling story, and for that story to be compelling the actors should posses a genuine talent for expressing emotion, and the directors need skill in ensuring that emotion is transferred to the camera.

"Season of Miracles" seems like the product of some well-to-do local church with a few extra dollars to rub together, who decided to make a "Christian" movie and used whatever members of the congregation -- regardless of talent level -- stepped up to the altar. You'll see it in the first few minutes; I've seen better acting in a Junior High English class reading of "Romeo and Juliet".

I get the fact there's a dearth of good Christian entertainment in the movie department. After all, we have our own dedicated brand of music that is quite competent and stands on its own merits without having to apologize for being "Christian".

When (if) you watch this movie, do not do so with high expectations of realistic performances or believable drama. There are standout performances that do so only because the others don't measure up. "Season of Miracles" is a "Christian" movie, and it's sad that having labeled it as such, it sets the appropriate level of expectation. It's sad that "Christian" movies continually lower that bar and consistently fail to achieve it.

Also, about the review by "sherrikillamwilliams" -- it would come as no surprise to me that this person is related to one of the actors or was somehow deeply involved with its production.

Like I said, I really, really wanted to like this movie.
