A Long Term Fan Asks: Did I Miss Something?

Aside from a particularly good and glossy sounding concert film, what the hell was the function of this film supposed to be?

I ask those who saw it in 3D, is is purely a visual spectacle? Because I watched it on ordinary DVD and the 'story' scenes looked... pretty drek if I'm honest. Perhaps you had to see it in 3D to get the visual impact?

Also, I could discern no story and little in terms of interesting abstract images to cling onto. Now, I'm no deep thinker, so again, did I miss something?

Happily the stuff with the bloke wandering about was mercifully short and didn't get in the way of one of my favourite Metallica concert films.

Never heard them play the stuff live that perfectly though!!! A few post production tweaks, I think.

What was the function? I don't know but I really liked it. Sure, it's not much of a story but it's different than just watching a live show I guess. They looked to have enjoyed being a part of it haha.

What was the function? I couldn't tell, either. I got stoned midway through, hoping that would help the experience. It didn't.

From one long-term fan to another; if you give the film a little more symbolic credit it maybe more than just filler..
I Just watched it for the first time, not knowing about the integrated storyline. I really got the feeling the bag belonged to Cliff and contained his ashes somehow. The film was released on 09/27/13, the 27th anniversary of his death. The way they had cliff (the bag) with them on stage at the end while playing orion together with only their most truly loyal fan in the crowd felt very sincere to me.

I felt like I was watching a tribute to him, and like they were trying to express through trip how they experienced the rollercoaster 'trip' they've been on throughout the years, with sometimes being in the dead center of complete chaos, anarchy and violence, everyone (fans included) feeling like enemies, also claiming cliff's symbolic remains. Some fans abandoned them after his death and more everytime they changed their style; somehow I had all that in the back of my mind while watching, as if they were trying to convey their experience to me between the storylines. symbolically drowning in it all, as a suffering struggling artist it could make you want to set yourself on fire and lash out...

In conclusion; It's possibly really deep if you want it to be, yet it doesn't have to be. I loved it whatever the true meaning turns out to be.

Another life-time fan here. I saw the movie on TV (I just learned from this post it has a 3D version which I'll buy by the end of the day).
I like the previous post. I agree that yes Metallica might have wanted a symbolic visual trinity for their journey but to me personally I thought they just wanted to give you visual reinforcement of the feelings in their songs. I'm not sure how to put it eloquently but you know how some songs make you feel sad or angry or whatever, the bits and pieces of the "movie" part are basically how they want you to feel.
The black man who stares into nothing then turns around and runs away. He's scared of the unknown.
Also like the previous poster said, I think the movie has great depth to it but it doesn't have to if you don't want to. You can just enjoy it for being incredibly unique or even more simply for the great great performances.
