Orion

What's the connection with Cliff and Orion? I've seen many mentions on here connecting the two.
Thanks

Cliff wrote the vast majority of Orion.

It is said to represent the depth of his knowledge of music theory and specifically his classical music influences.

Also, as it was a moody instrumental from the last album before his death, a lot of fans also connect it with his legacy.

I Just watched it for the first time, not knowing about the integrated storyline. I really got the feeling the bag belonged to Cliff and contained his ashes somehow. The film was released on 09/27/13, the 27th anniversary of his death. The way they had cliff (the bag) with them on stage at the end while playing orion together with only their most truly loyal fan in the crowd felt very sincere to me. Like a tribute, somehow.

I maybe giving Through the Never too much symbolic credit here, but I felt like they were trying to express through trip how they experienced the rollercoaster 'trip' they've been on throughout the years, with sometimes being in the dead center of complete chaos, anarchy and violence, everyone (fans included) feeling like enemies, also claiming cliff's symbolic remains. as a suffering struggling artist it could make you want to set yourself on fire and lash out...
I loved it whatever the true meaning turns out to be.

I hope that explanation is true, it sounds perfect.

I agree, did you also watch it on film4, Furiousfury?

I got the fancy 3D disc. But I saw it in the listings last week. Great channel, that Film4. It showed Mission to Mars a while back too.

It was worth sitting through all the "narrative" nonsense just to hear the band playing "Orion" over the end credits.

Also, Cliff basically wrote Orion, it's one of the few songs that really show his influence and unique style, I heard James say in an interview that he was the only one clasically trained and had the broadest palette of influences and skill in multiple genres. He was an experimenting pioneer that would have led to a very different metallica than we have today.
