why were they no black ppl in this film? no blacks in LA seriously?

get real, what a racist film

reply

I don't know why any actors black or white, male or female, Christian or atheist, vegetarian or caveman would want to be associated with a poorly made piece of crap like this.

Please relax and don't strain your troll muscle. Casting for a Canadian co-funded film is tricky enough with production having quotas and limits regarding the nationalities of the actors. I don't think I saw any Native Americans either.

..or asians...or hispanic/latino.
this may have also tied into the theme of direct familial incest....diversity is never welcome in an incestuous society.
cronenberg also mentioned ancient Egypt in interviews where royalty only married incestuously to keep the blood line "pure" (while obviously having a terrible effect on their genetics due to inbreeding).

Are you serious?

reply

Actually I believe the exclusion of black people was done on purpose by Cronenberg. This film is a satire of Hollywood, and the industry is notoriously known for its extreme white-washing. He was poking fun at that idea by showcasing a broad city like LA with everyone being white.

tanoy - Better question... why are there no real people depicted in this film? Because it's a film... an art form, so they can do as they wish and add only the colors they wish.

Do you call paintings lacking the color black racist, too?

Is it a racist film if only black people are in it and no white people? Is it racist if only Asians are in it, and no other race? Keep going with that...

Is it a racist film if the writers, crew, director, make-up, wardrobe and set designers are of varied races while the story only calls for one race?

Are you getting my point? There is NO ENTITLEMENT for any race to be included in any one piece of creative art. Your perspective reeks of entitlement.

The racist card got used too often and to manipulate unfairly, so now the "charge" of being called, "racist" is watered-down. That is the effect your OP has, IMO. You just gave everyone practice ignoring the word, "racist." Perhaps you should decide what effect you wish you have.

Those of us whom care about equal rights, ethnic diversity and fair practices, would appreciate it if you stopped and had a "think" before you post.

Debate my points. Challenge my perspective. Prove me wrong. Only, do it with a smile.[cooldance]

I'm outraged also. Where are the Eskimos and Australian aboriginals????!!!! I'll never watch a Chromenberg film again!!!

reply

having or showing the belief that a particular race is superior to another.

You have made a factual error. There is no racism in this film.

i thought it was quite refreshing to have a black-free film.

is there a law that requires a minimum number of blacks per movie?

reply

What I found to be very disingenuous was the lack of Latinos or Asians (in addition to African Americans) in the film. I'm sure that defenders or publicists for this film will claim that Cronenberg was focusing on the entertainment industry, not the city of LA. Whatever his intention was, Maps doesn't represent LA in any way.

This is the most recent census of LA:
White: 41.3%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race): 47.5%
Asian: 10.7%
Black or African American: 9.8%

The maid was a wetback. And too many of the background extras in the bar, outdoor and cafeteria scenes were negros. Disgusting really. They could have had one snatch a purse on Hollywood Blvd or something to show them as are in real life.

look at spike lees films. He is a bigot as well. Relative to the population he has no fat people, elderly people, and less than the number if Hispanics and women than the population statistics mandate.

....of racism.
