How realistic did you think the kid was?

I liked the movie a lot. I especially liked the teacher! The whole movie has a very upbeat feeling. Like people aren't really bad, *beep* just happens and we deal with it.

But the kid was a bit over the top, like a prodigy or genius. Not even sure how old he was supposed to be? Jaeden was about 10 in 2013 (when the movie was filmed?). He seemed to have read a lot and knew a lot and and understood people very well, and actually could use this knowledge and insight. Have you ever met a kid that could speak like that?

In any case fantastic portrayal by Jaeden Lieberher.

It is very possible for a kid to be "wise beyond his years."

Especially those who are often bullied or suffer other traumatic events.

Right now, we are alive... And in this moment, I swear... We are infinite.

I think he was just a very mature child after clearly having to grow up quick due to his home life. I've seen a lot of kids that act mature beyond their years

Some kids are just that reserved and well spoken and don't feed off of other people when they over react. Once this kid drank spoiled milk and softly put the cup down saying this milk taste bad. While the parent was going hysterical over her son having tasted the spoiled milk. Some kids just aren't bothered to feed off of other people and their extra energy. Which gives them a sound mind. But in this movie Oliver soared when he did his presentation! He took his research all the way to the top! He even got background from Vincent's drinking buddies! LOOL

We're looking for bunnies! :)

When I was a kid, I was a lot like Oliver, except bigger. Oliver was waif-like in this movie. Still, I recognized those same nerdy mannerisms.

How interesting would an actor playing a very average kid have been? A lot of the characters were "over the top". How dull do the characters have to be?

reply

Very very dull! I like my food bland also, I avoid any kind of spices, salt and don't like taste in general. Often I even clamp my nose shut to reduce flavor. Anything interesting, flavorful or noisy gets me very excited and aggravated and I really can't afford smashing any more PCs. So stop discriminating against me.

Just kidding lol. The kid actor did an amazing job and I liked the character a lot! So it's not really about that. I'm just curious of these kids exist in a significant fraction. He seemed like a childhood prodigy and way too adult, not just clever but like wise beyond years which is strange because a kid simply don't have the life experience. It's cool but a bit like a superhero trope.

I will say that Oliver was a cool character.

Not all kids are these smart alecky jerk-offs that you see in most movies. There are a lot of smart and precocious kids around. They don't all play video games.

reply

Of course it was realistic, it's not like the kid was building spaceships in his backyard. I'm not sure where people are getting this genius stuff from.

The mother says in the movie that the kid is very intelligent and a good speaker. He was a smart kid that stayed to himself and focused a lot on academics.

The kid was excellent.

This is the second thread where someone complained about the kid being "too smart". I don't think it's weird at all for a child to be intelligent. I feel bad for the people who live in areas with all the dumb kids.

reply

Yeah it's not unusual for a kid to be intelligent. But there is a difference to the kind of insight into the "human condition" the kid showed. You need certain experiences to understand these things. Some kids pick up certain emotional needs because their parents are needy and they are required to fulfill them, so they develop a sense for it. But this seemed different. I'll have to watch the movie again.

Anyway it's just a niggle, like I said I liked the character.

BTW this thread is rather old.

I agree. I just didn't find it odd since I pretty much was that kid growing up.

I thought he was GREAT.. for a pretty young man, I thought he acted very well.. held his own..
I am going to see what he will be in next, as I feel he has a good future in the movie business..
