Almost skipped it because Melissa McCarthy was in it...

...because I have been so turned off by her foul-mouthed, every-other-word-the-F-Word comedies in the past, like "The Heat," and I thought this was going to be the same thing. I did not go to the theater to see this movie, and just caught it on Showtime, and it was great all-around, especially Bill Murray, and lo and behold Melissa McCarthy gave a sympathetic portrayal of a single mother.

It was a Bill Murray movie, so I went to see it. I had no idea she was in it. Luckily, as you stated, she was excellent in it. Like you, I avoid her 'comedies' for the same reason you stated.

reply

Exactly! Yes, she was rather sympathetic but certainly not excellent. She still was the low point of the film. No matter how grouchy and despicable Bill Murray's character was, he and his performance were still more likeable than her being the nice character.

Heat was awful!

Do you want to go to Mac Donald's

reply

Melissa McCarthy at 350 degrees would take several months, an apple is optional!

reply

agree, can't stand McCarthy, but she played it straight here and she was pretty good

reply

Ditto. Murray excellent as always

reply

Yup.
Melissa has been type-cast in the last few years, so I happened to watch this movie this week and was really surprised that she played a regular mom in this.
She was really good.
ps: Loved this movie.

I agree and don't care for her comedy either. She did good job in this movie. I wish she would do more drama.

I find McCarthy terribly unfunny, but I like her in this. Should drop comedic movies and stick to straight acting.
