was it suppose to be ..... ?

was it suppose to be watched by kids under 13 ??

it was really bad , i expected allot by watching the trailer and imdb ratings .

gaming thing was ok but the drama was too bad and irritating .

if you are an adult and expect it to be a good action fun movie , don't watch it its not even close .

(please dont mind my english-i know its bad)

Ugh... this movie was really bad. I too was tricked by imdb ratings. Which I believe were rigged in order to get more views? Unless there is some sort of demographic that I am just completely oblivious too, I do not see how the tween vote could have this much depth and pull on IMDB. In fact, I think this is a set back for IMDB as they have lost all credibility. Sure I will use them for plot summaries and actress biographies... but never use their ratings to determine if I should watch anything.

Maybe you went in expecting a lot, given IMDB ratings? I find my reaction to a movie often depends on my expectations going in. When I started watching VGHS (presented on Netflix as a movie) I just expected a quirky show with some reasonably cool FPS action and a sprinkle of the language and culture I've grown accustomed to. That's pretty much what I got, and I'd rate VGHS highly based on it exactly meeting my expectations. The only thing it was missing was the racist, misogynistic, expletive-laden lobby talk, and I'm thankful for that.

I also logged onto CoD within 10 minutes of finishing, the movie really sparked my craving.

Heh, ditto for me, although older by 13 years and a recent convert to MW3.

I found this on Netflix as well and really enjoyed it, although I realize it was targeting a younger demographic.

It has some great video game references without being overly esoteric or in-joke-y (I covet BrianD's IBM Model 'M' mechanical keyboard) and while it's light-hearted fluff, I found the entertaining and amusing, with great production values, writing, acting, etc.

And yeah, I too fired up MW3 for some FFA as soon as I finished watching the movie. ;)

Problem is, you went in expecting a *movie* in the first place. It's a fun YouTube series that got compiled into a single 2-hour feature-length format.

reply

It's amazing how many people here don't understand this. It's a web-series.. not a high-production movie. Most of the show was funded by donations and volunteer work.

reply

Actually it's a full-length film that they later broke down into a series for release and easier consumption... Like any film production they had only limited time to use various sets etc. so it's not like they filmed Episode One, released it, then filmed Two, released it, etc.

Even if you didn't find the film hilarious or awesomely exciting or whatever, the documentary is fantastic -- it really makes you appreciate what a big deal it is that they succeeded in making the finished product with such a small budget and with such a small crew (compared to countless Hollywood action films of similar scale).

I'm an adult (30+), a gamer, and found this to be a pretty darn funny movie.

Gotta say I agree with the thread starter. This show was bad, like, really bad. And I'm a fan of the FreddieW channel, deffinately, but as with many indy filmmakers who are good at making YouTube short films, they absolutely made a load of crap with this VGHS.
I especially was surprised that it sucked so much, seeing as how Freddie and Brandon seem to have a pretty good BS-indy-filmmakers detector, but i guess not. They made the same mistake everybody else does, they are used to making shorts with no real story (which is alright because it fits that format), and therefore made a full feature series (I think it's called),, with no story.

I think the raeson for its popularity is all the fanboys, so to speak. I mean, FreddieW has a LOT of extreme fans, and they will usually like anything made by their idol, if it just remotely resembles what they like them for.

I did watch the full first season, and I am going to watch the second season too, I think, however mostly because of the Behind the scenes videos, which are great.
I do, however, hope that they have realized how crazy bad season one was, and ten improoved for season two, and by that I mean; added a working story (and not just a storyline that coulda been thought up and written down in ten seconds) - made the lines less cheesy and cliché - made it more funny - and all together, made it more watchable by people over the age of 10.
There are actually many other things I would like made differently/better, but that's things that was established in the first season, so I guess it's gonna stay the same (y'know, like how they are able to make incredibly intricate moves in the game, seemingly only by using the regular A S D W shift space keys).

On a final note. No I did not pledge on their kickstarter, was really hoping they wouldn't get finansed so they'd go back to their YouTube shorts that I love and think are awesome.

So, did you watch the second season? Seeing they embraced the genre of teen/kid show, I guess you were as much disappointed as I was. I barely made myself finish the season, I wish I could even call it guilty pleasure, but there was no pleasure in watching, I watched as a fan of Freddie, because it's free and vfx can be nice. I do understand that some older people (25+, I am 25 too) can like it too... but the main demographic is underaged kids and that's what it is. I don't think I'll be watching next season, because season 2 made me question myself a lot.

Yeah, this is pretty much absolute trash. It sucks as I was a big fan of the work Freddie Wong and Brnadon Latsch were doing on YouTube before embarking on this horribly written and executed, cringeworthy vehicle/

I'll note that the third and final season, was pretty enjoyable. Clearly the better season of the three. Very different than the previous two seasons, and thus didn't really fit the style very much, but looking past that, it was quite enjoyable and refreshing. Still not very good, but good enough.

reply

23 here, went in with no expections, enjoyed it. it wasnt the best thing I watched, but I thought it was damn good for a free youtube show.

reply

It's corny but some of it is genuinely funny, the gaming stuff is pretty cool and well shot, and it's authentic...meaning that it's made by a genuinely passionate gamer. The creator, Freddie Wong, is actually a Guitar Hero champion, just like his character on the show.

Now you don't talk so loud. Now you don't seem so proud.

I don't understand what you were expecting. This series is actually really entertaining. It is directed well, the special effects are on par with a lot of Hollywood productions, and the acting is just as good or even better than what you'd get on your average television show.

I couldn't ask for more from a series created by a Youtuber. The thing is, though, I forget that this was created by a Youtuber. This could easily pass as a regular TV show except for the fact that it is 10x better.

28 male non gamer, film professor. Love it. It's got my type of people and personalities. They really captured lightning in a bottle with the tone. Very difficult to get everyone on the same page for something like this.

It doesn't seem like it was made to match the 90s, it feels like it came out of the 90s.

If you can't find this genuine then I feel bad for how bleak your experience in life is.
