I love this movie'

Living in the southwest and having driven through the border towns between Texas and Mexico many times, this movie rang very true to me. So I'm wondering, why did people hate it so virulently? I'm not unaware of the movie's many flaws, I'm just curious what some of the specific complaints are.

I found it fascinating except so far I have been unable to finish it, once the border patrol agent had Adam behind a building near the end. Would someone care to enlighten me as to what happened?

I think the chief complaint is that it's over-the-top. To some it seemed as if all the teenage sex and promiscuity were just geared for ratings, notoriety, money. I think I can see their point to an extent. When the border patrol agent was looking at photos on his computer which he later printed out for that very calm mother, I felt as if the filmmaker was he and basically doing the same thing to us. I'm wondering if the filmmaker thinks of his stuff as docudrama. When you think of the deeper implications, e.g., possibly two young women with pregnancies with uncertain male protectiveness, the thought is so depressing I can only hope that's not the way things really are in a small town like that.
