*Spoilers* Question about her dog

Did her dog really die like that in the book? That scene broke my heart.

reply

Yes, it was startling to see it portrayed just as in the book, and as how I imagined it would look from the description. This wasn't something they trumped up for the film, this really happened. When I read it in "Tracks" it had a powerful effect on me, and though I knew it was coming in the film, it still was heart breaking.

I'm with you two on this one all the way – the untimely death of Robyn's belovéd Diggity had me weeping buckets in sympathy with her.

It also had me considering afresh the dichotomy of her (and my, our) relationships with animals of our persistent acquaintance – in particular the contrast between, at best, a fondness for individual beasts of burden, cf. relationships of loving companionship and mutual, playful affection with dogs and cats.

Robyn's desperate and wholly understandable depression, consequent upon her having to end Diggity's terminal suffering, and compounded by recurring memories of her childhood sadness at losing Goldie, seemed to me to pose a greater jeopardy to her journey's completion than any of the physical challenges that desert trekking presented. The inner resilience she found to carry on marks Robyn out as one remarkably admirable adventurer.

Very insightful post, I concur completely regarding her experience with her childhood pet Goldie. That was a very revealing scene.

Me too, it was very sad how she failed in the dog's care. But if she'd cared about the dog, she would not have taken it. Very unlikely it found poison in millions of square miles of desert, much more likely it died from neglect. But, hey, poison left by poachers sounds good on a film! And it glosses over her cruelty too!
