"Go home!" in the dropped compass scene

I feel like an idiot. I didn't understand the logic behind the "go home" scene where she lost track of where she and the dog were upon finding the compass. Surely "home" was the opposite direction to where she needed to get to, to return to the camels? And instead of watching where the dog was headed and then go in the opposite direction, she instead followed him, which by my logic would have taken her even farther away from the camels?

In this case "home" was where they had been camped and where the camels and their supplies were. The scene was depicted exactly as it was described in Robyn Davidson's memoir "Tracks".
She writes how she saw the realization and excitement in Diggity's eyes when she realized what was being asked of her, and that she could deliver - a great scene.

Oh I see, I hadn't read the book.

It was confusing because the way they filmed it, it made it look like the dog felt sad it was being "sent back" and running "home" grudgingly.
