What's up with Russian cigarettes?

Why is there a filter and why was the filter twice as long as the actual tobacco end?

reply

The cardboard tube acts as a disposable cigarette holder, there is no filter in this type of cigarette.

Okay, that makes sense. It made me think these actors REALLY don't want to get lung cancer with that big of a filter!

P.S. yes, I do know they use herbal cigarettes.

My mother lived in Eastern Europe 20odd years ago - she remembers unfiltered cigarettes that had the cardboard holders, she said that they were really annoying because they were so cheap (Eastern Europe in the early 90's wasn't famed for good quality manufacturing!) so they'd go soft and damp while you were smoking. She used to have to tear them in half half way through the cigarette to keep on smoking.

As mentioned, that long piece is a cigarette holder. They were used in the USA several decades ago as well. I remember my grandmother using them to look glamorous (smoking used to be considered "cool").

Just FYI, you can buy this type of cigarette on eBay. Just search "Russian vintage cigarettes" (without quotes).
