character of the young doctor - spoiler-

I have to say that the young doctor behaved in a way despicable and bar any human affection that I had to force myself finishing the show.

His more than heartless behaviour with his dying midwife & Natasha. After this moment any tried comedy was lost on me. Just hated him for being this garbage of a man.

Have a hard time remembering some character in a show who turned out to be a rat like this one. Him chosing morphine over the life of his "loved" Natasha was just the last tip on the iceberg.

I thouroughly enjoyed the series up until that point in episode 3. He was always portrayed as a selfcentered weak egomaniac but that really turned him into a sociapathic low life.

I will not watch the series again because of that. Just cant enjoy the funnny moments with him anymore.

I think it is meant to show how the drugs took over his life. His addiction left him caring about no one and nothing but his next injection.

I've never really understood why some people feel like they have to like the character in a show or movie. But I know many are like that. For me, I liked seeing how bad he got when addicted to the morphine, and it served as a nice counter between the older and younger in the 2 seasons. They kind of switched places, with the older one reminiscing about those times, and really seeing how despicable he had been when using.

I dont need to "like the character". much of the best Drama is with characters I cant identify at all. F.e. the mother in Allens "Interiors", Stringer Bell in The Wire , Ted Talbot in Rectify...etc.

Maybe it is the strange pacing of the series were he behaves like a complete monster and then the next joke is coming and shown us in a positive way.

Imo the character behaves like a monster in his young days but is not portrayed like that from the filmmaker. It seems like they always look to make a dark comeday out of it and while that works with many well bad characters it doesnt work at all for me with him.

The actors are all fantastic. Really an amazing cast of talent.

from a broader perspective, it provides a drama of an older self looking back at a younger self, in horror.

the older self had not, heretofore, but able/willing to confront his past. with good reason.

and yet, for all that, we see an older self who has somehow been able to grow a sense of decency.

which is, in the end, a somewhat hopeful resolution.

it is an extreme case - but i can personally identify with my younger self being far more heedless and selfish than i am now, or at least flatter myself as that to be the case.

and so, it is either a parable for the young, or a lament for the old.
