Questions S2 E1

In this episode an inspector is coming to take inventory of the supplies, including the morphine the doctor has been stealing. The inspector get caught in a battle on the way to the hospital and ends up with a serious stomach wound. The young doctor delays treating him, hoping he will die and avoiding the discovery of the missing morphine.

Since the older doctor is the younger doctor later in life, how it is possible that the older doctor didn't know who the man was?

Why was he surprised that the young doctor deliberately made him wait for treatment? He was the young doctor, so he should already know what he did.

reply

He may have been in some sort of denial about himself in those days. In the midst of his addiction, doing whatever he needed to, rationalizing it at the time. Looking back and being surprised how despicable he had been.

Of course I wouldn't take the show strictly accurate in a future self interacting with a past self. I'm fine with some dramatic tinkering.

reply

Yes they hinted several times that the doctor had distorted his memory of events over time. When he leaves after the mid wife dies he says under his breath, "I thought I stayed for hours"

reply

I remember that scene. You make a good point.

But I think there's a difference between time perception & memory distortions and not remembering *anything* about a specific, important event in his life. I could understand if something was so disturbing to him he didn't want to remember or he was in denial, but as soon as he faced the incident the second time (as older doctor viewing his younger self) I would expect him to at least, even reluctantly, to face reality.

In this episode, older doctor just seemed to have no clue at all.
