Freemasons as a Brit obsession

I can't get together specific examples right now but I've noticed that Freemasons frequently figure as sinister behind-the-scenes characters in British films, TV shows and crime novels. The involvement of Masons in the Metropolitan Police is specially problematic. Pedophilia is the only other recurring topic that seems to get as much attention.

Some believe Jack the Ripper was a Freemason, thereby avoiding exposure and prosecution.

That may connect with the fact that Freemasonry played such a large part in the American Revolution - many of the Founding Fathers were Masons, and one of the emblems displayed on US currency started out as a near-duplicate of one used by the Scottish Rite (it has since been altered to be less similar).
