Adele ;_;

Why, WHY did they kill Adele? Such a cute little chicken, I thought he was a pet, not that they were raising their own meat. Why did they take care of Adele, get to know him, then kill and eat him? Why not go buy some chicken from the damn store or a restaurant? Those chickens are already dead, and you never knew them!
It's a (very) small relief that Josh couldn't do it. I don't know if I could keep watching if he'd done it. But damn, Claire was such a bitch this episode. Then at the end, when instead of saying grace, they sang "Someone Like You"? Incredibly stupid. I felt like they were mocking the poor animal. I don’t remember the last time I sat watching something and HATED it this much.
Worst. Episode. EVER!

I knew that they would get a lot of hate for this episode. Like I've said in other posts, though, it's one of the reasons I love the show - they are obviously "progressive" but they are willing to take things on that other so-called liberal shows would never touch.

Once they found out that Adele was male, they couldn't keep it anymore. Their choices were to bring it back to the farm (where it would be killed but they would get a refund!) or kill it themselves. Josh had apparently always been going on about how we, in modern society, have a sanitized view of meat, that we are disconnected from the food we eat, and how it is actually quite messy.

I think one of the points that they were making was, if you are a meat-eater, you should be able to come to terms with what you're doing. You either think it's ok, or not. After all, someone else kills your food if you don't do it yourself. Why is it o.k. to kill a random chicken but not one that you "know"? This show is excellent because it tackles all of these messy contradictions that we through live day to day.

And, as they explained in a later scene, you might think that Claire was a bitch in this episode but she is dealing with issues of her own ...

Those are all good points :) I still don't quite understand why they couldn't keep Adele, though. Were they afraid he'd breed with the hens? Couldn't they have given him his own room?

Yeah, I think that's why - they were afraid that he'd breed with the hens. True, they could have kept him in his own pen (like they did for 24 hours before killing him) but, I mean, the point in having the chickens (I assume - like a lot of things on this show, they never explained why they got them in the first place) was to have them lay eggs, not to have them as pets. Would they have just kept him in an isolation cage for years until he died? Not sure how good that would have been either.

Like you, I found the scene hard to watch. I don't think I could/would have done the deed. I probably would have taken him back to the farm. But, I'm a meat-eater. So ... maybe I am a hypocrite since I'm willing to let someone else kill my food but don't want to do it myself!

Because he was waking them up at the crack of dawn and it's not really the kind of animal you would keep when you live in a residential area, unless you really want to p*ss off your neighbours.

I don't eat meat but I'm not one of those crazy anti meat people but that episode was hella traumatic. I didn't think they were actually going to do it. I fast forward through that part hoping they didn't do it and then Claire had blood all over her hands and I almost barfed all over my couch. Couldn't watch the episode after that

Roosters are illegal to keep in the suburbs.

Not here in Canberra, they're not. Been down that road with a neighbour - they got to keep their cock and we got to keep getting woken up at sparrow's every morning :(

reply

Call your council, they should be able to sort it out.

I love that they sang Someone Like You. It's a sad song about a lost love, I think it was perfect.
