Why doesn't Kay just go to a food bank?

or a soup kitchen and a clothing bank instead of dumpster diving for crap?

Since she lives in New York City, she has to live close to free clothing banks food banks and soup kitchens.

At least by going she can get some clothes that fit her without the need for binder clips (and for free) and she can eat 2-3 meals a day if she plans it right for free as well. Then go to food banks to fill in the gap-it would be far more sanitary than dumpster diving for food and clothes. If she doesn't want to pay for food or clothes, why doesn't she do that?

If she has no shame in digging through other peoples trash going to these places would be a step up

She has money to buy food and toiletries. She doesn't want to spend it.

reply

I know she doesn't want to spend it. I'm asking why doesn't she go to a food bank or a soup kitchen? Lot healthier than fishing for dinner in a dumpster

i think she's into the thrill of the hunt. i think she's a loner and probably doesn't want to mix with others so diving is preferred for both reasons.

I occasionally donate to the food bank in my city. The food bank has a sign you have to fill out a form.I would guess you have to prove need for food.Food bank is just not for people who are cheap and don't want to spend their money on food.

"The food bank has a sign you have to fill out a form."

fjan,
the soup kitchen in our city doesn't even ask a person's name, no info is necessary to received food.
no questions are asked and people are always grateful not to have to answer questions.

reply

thats how the salvation army soup kitchen in my area works. The men's homeless shelter also offers dinner 5 nights a week. No form, no questions. While most food banks in my area do ask for proof of residency and # of people in household, there are a few that only ask you for you name and family size when you sign in and take your word that you are telling the truth.

Where I live people who eat at the soup kitchens and free food handouts eat better than a lot of working folks who go to grocery stores and actually use their own money for food. I actually go to a T-day dinner at the soup kitchen cause it is so good. This gal plans to take all her saved $$$$$$ with her to the grave where it will be worm food.

reply

Probably because she'd have to use electricity to cook.

I will NEVER complain my mom is cheap again! I tease her cuz she goes to random stores to buy food, but this is crazy.

I told her that if she started acting like them I'm having her committed.

I read she saves 4 grand a month and puts 1 grand a month into her retirement account. Apparently that studio she bought she paid $200,000 for and paid it off within a year. I mean more power to her, but seriously? She could even spend $1,000 a month and still save quite a bit of her income. She doesn't have to live THAT cheaply.

reply

Yeah if her story is true she definitely has some sort of psychological issue, no matter the severity. She claimed she is a licensed CPA, which means at a bare minimum she earns $80k a year. What is she saving all this money for then? I have an extremely frugal grandmother that grew up during the Depression era, but she isn't digging through garbage bags to eat while her bank account collects dust. Like someone else said, she's just going to take all that money to the grave. What's the point?

Good thing, cuz she'll probably end up old and alone.

The one near me just copies down your driver's license number so people don't come more than once a month. Other than that, there's no qualifying.

reply

I volunteer with a crap ton of food banks. Some don't require anything other than you just showing up. Others ask that you please don't come more than once or twice a month. The ones that limit you to once or twice a month want proof of address-usually a utility bill and driver's license and how many in your household (and birth certificates or medical ID card with minor kids name and birthday on it)

As far as "proving" you need food from the food bank-no. It's just assumed if your trying to get food from a food bank you need the food.

Also...why doesn't Kay go to a soup kitchen/feeding program for some or all of her meals? If she's not above dumpster diving then a soup kitchen is a dream. Much cleaner too.

I wasn't arguing with you. I was pointing out to someone else that not every food pantry makes you prove you need the food. Food from the food pantry is better than dumpster driving...I've went myself a few times in bad times and I've noted a lot of things handed out is near or right past the expiration date and still tastes fine.

If its me your talking to, wasn't meaning to come off as arguing. I do agree food banks/food pantrys and soup kitches are a bit better than dumpster diving.

I'm guessing she wouldn't quite have the unmitigated gall to do something like that. As a person with a job, who is by no means truly struggling for survival, doing a thing like that seems a good way to get the living crap kicked out of you if it was found out.

I certainly hope she never goes to a soup kitchen or food bank! Those places are for the needy not the cheap!

reply

I hope she doesn't either but it's safer/cleaner than dumpster diving for food and clothing.

I guess dumpster diving is more honest that going to a food bank when you obviously not eligible.

You make a good point. Her episode was the most interesting. Ignoring the friends girlfriend who was obviously being fed lines.

I'd say most of the people on this show exhibit mental illness. Kate's situation is particularly interesting. She clearly has a good income yet lives like a homeless junkie. You guys catch those legs and arms? She needs some freebie razors!

I bet her bank account is very rosy. That and she has an appreciating asset. Bit of a shame this woman is probably going to live that way until she dies. Wonder how she would react to a friend wanting to borrow money.

In my area, there is a church that offers free lunch to anyone who shows up. No questions asked. A millionaire could walk in.

The food pantries have forms. I'm not sure if they ask people to prove their income. I think the main point of the forms is to stop people from abusing their generosity by taking too much or visiting too often. They do have to prove that they live in the county, I know that for a fact because the newspaper had an issue about homeless people not having a way to prove residency.

reply

If she wants to save money on food the union gospel mission serves three meals a day (2 on sat and sun-brunch and dinner) to anyone who shows up. No questions asked. The Catholic church serves lunch 6 days a week. Any one can show up. Different churches offer community suppers each week, usually on a Friday. They ask for a small donation to help keep the program going but no one is turned away if they don't/can't make a donation.

As others have already hinted at/outright stated, I think it would be utterly despicable for a person of means to take resources designed for the truly needy simply because they don't want to spend money.

However, if Kate's obvious mental illness wasn't staged for entertainment purposes, where she's getting her food is the least of her problems.

The past is now part of my future; the present is well out of hand.

reply

Very well stated. I completely agree that a person with means should not take from those who have nothing. Kate seriously needs some time in a mental hospital.
