A funny irony...

...is that a lot of these cheapskates ways of saving money actually COST them money in the end.

The most obvious case was the most recent show with the 'salmon carcass' guy--he bought a $10 bottle of coconut oil to make (more than likely ersatz) deodorant. Meanwhile (as we've learned via 'Extreme Couponing' lol) you can easily get deodorant free with sales/coupons.

Or, the guy who re-used his paper towels. Uh, ever heard of a rag? Take an old shirt--it's free and way more durable. Or, the guy who bought the random police car balloon at the party store. Dollar tree has already inflated balloons for (obviously) only a dollar and/or packages of plain balloons.

I know this show is probably fake and they present absurd situations on purpose for so-called entertainment value, but I wish they'd show people who at least had cheapskate ideas that made some sense/were at least semi-feesable in a real life setting.

It's like some of them never heard of the 99 cent store by saying they can't afford toilet paper when they sell those things at the 99 cent store.

That lady who goes to the gym to take a shower could really save by buying gym equipment to use at home.I bet there is lots of hardly used gym equipment for sale cheap.

Egads > I used to have this friend who used her bath/shower as a storage closet and went to the gym to shower... I thought that was weird, but other than that she was A-OK.

How much was she spending daily on gas to drive to the gym? I'm sure a quick 3 minute shower at home would be cheaper than driving to and from the gym.

Not to mention that deodorant in it self is waste of money

True. Any real saver would do the math. Then again it might be that they are urban people who only know about consumerist lifestyle, and attemp to keep it up with as little money as possible. In such cases you get people running behind a taxi, because it saves more money than running behind a bus

I would have to agree. Even with Jeff Yeager - It takes him the better part of an afternoon to round up enough loose change to buy some meat scraps and find dryer lint. But if you work for a whole day, you will have a lot more money than that. Then again, I guess it can be fun to go on a bicycle ride and a scavenger hunt too.

The guy who thought he was saving money by peeling apart 2ply toilet paper. So, now he has to use 8 single sheets instead of 4 double sheets, for example. I think people use the amount of tp that they feel will get the job done. If the tissue is thinner, they will grab extra.

The woman who used fabric instead of toilet paper. The amount of time, energy, and supplies might cancel out the cost. She still has to buy bleach to kill germs. She still has to run the washer on a hot cycle to sanitize the wipes. How much water and energy does that waste? Then, they have to fold them.

Just buy the darn toilet paper! There are coupons for every major brand. It's not that hard to get plenty of bathroom tissue for a low cost.

I agree. When it comes to single ply, I fold it up, many many times over. I almost always use as much, if not more, when it comes to single-ply. If you don't fold it multiple times, it's just kind of gross. You might as well use tissue paper.

...Or does she???

I was wondering why they didn't go to a gas station and take some tp from the public bathroom.

reply

I used to do this! I was really broke once, for over a year, barely getting the rent paid. One month I literally had $4 left in the bank to get me through the rest of the week to pay day. Every time I used a public restroom, I took 10-20 squares of tp.

And don't forget, people used to use old newspapers and catalogues for tp, back before it was mass-produced. There are a lot of options for reasonable solutions if someone really doesn't want to buy tp.
