Why doesn't Kay/Katie/The asian dumpster diving lady use food banks?

Don't understand why she just can't go to food banks in her area. All the ones in my area just ask for proof you live in their service area. Also-being in NYC there's got to be a sh!t ton of *FREE* meals open to the public 7 days a week where they don't ask any questions-they assume your hungry by showing up.

I live in a small severely undeserved via social services podunk town and yet between the three Catholic Churches, 2 Methodist Churches and the Men's Union Gospel Mission you can get, if you time it just right, 3-5 hot meals 7 days a week. For Free. No id required. You just show up and behave yourself.

Hell the 2 Methodist churches are notorious for cooking way to much food and at dinner time practically make you take the day's leftovers home with you when you leave.

Lot more safer and more sanitary then crawling through dumpsters.

It can't be a pride/dignity issue. You threw your pride and dignity out, set it on fire and ran it over when you dragged home a mattresses found in dumpsters, you were to cheap to pay a quarter for a shirt, get all your lady hygiene products for free from companies because your to cheap to buy your own dam lady hygiene products. You have no pride in yourself or respect for yourself or others when you feed your only friend and his girl friend dumpster food.

Well maybe she makes a decent living and thus would not qualify to use a food bank. Just because you are cheap does not mean you are poor, as you can see from this show.

I've never in my life been to a food bank or heard of a food bank that requires proof of income. Just proof you live in the area they serve.

If that's true, that makes so sense. Food banks exist to assist those with a low or no income. They're not there to give away food to financially secure people. I live in Canada and you need to prove that you are struggling financially.

This is on the website for The Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto:

What you need when visiting a food bank:

Identification for everyone in your household
Information about your household income
Information about your housing and utility expenses
Answers to questions about yourself, such as marital status, type of housing, education etc.

I have a job where I go into people's homes and help with aspects of their lives. I had a client once who used the food bank and I went along to help out once. It was definitely a controlled environment. You had to sign in when you arrived, you had to be on the list already. You're pre screened/approved and it's TOTALLY based on income. It branches out from there, married, kids, monthly bills, that sorta thing but you had to fall below a line on the income spectrum to even be considered in the first place. Any change of income or benefits and she would have had to let them know. It was all very technical and actually looked hard to get into the program. That was in a suburb of Seattle so I'm not sure about any other food bank in the world but that's my one and only experience with them.

I hope she's not going to food banks or soup kitchens. She's just extremely cheap, there are people who actually need those services.

I donate to food banks. I would be HIGHLY PISSED OFF if my donations are being eaten by people who do not NEED food banks.

Yes, as many here have stated, this Japanese/American dumpster diving woman was NOT struggling financially....she is simply extraordinarily cheap. She's not eligible to get food stamps or food from a food bank, she is gainfully employed and owns a condo!

Food is one area people should not skimp on, we get our nutrients from good fresh food. You have to wonder what side affects her extreme lifestyle will have on her health years down the line.

As for service and items....in Manhattan and some other NY boroughs, there are bartering clubs frugal people can join.

Members can exchange their services. For example, if you're a great seamstress, you can offer to sew something for someone who is a better typist, they can type your school papers, or whatever you need typed, in exchange for you sewing for them. Of course, we are talking anything within the real of being legal.

There's also an exchange group for products. You can exchange clothes, books, CDs, working appliances etc. Of course, you must make sure to ask about bed bugs!

If this woman wants to live this extreme lifestyle, she doesn't really need to constantly dumpster dive, especially as there are other options out there for freebies.....there are many bartering and exchange services for getting tasks done and for free items.

I'm surprised she's not aware of this service. She must have Internet access, I recall her mentioning going online to sign up for freebie toiletries.

Just like other people said getting into a food bank is quite hard. I have never heard of one where you just show up show them your ID and take the food home.. My family has had to use food banks several times. After my father passed away suddenly we were left with lots of bills and feeding a family of 4 on low income is no easy task..

It even took us awhile to get approved to one of the food banks near us but I am forever grateful for the people there or else I don't know how my family would have kept our house and provided food for ourselves over those long months..

I would also be incredibly pissed if someone who obviously has well over enough income to support themselves is taking food from people who actually need it because they can't afford it.. And yes before you ask I do work, so does my sister, brother and mother.

Thanks for sharing your story, Torque. And thanks, too, for sharing my feelings that people who don't need assistance should not be getting free food that other people donate in good faith!

^^ I'm surprised she even has this...unless she just goes to Internet Cafes or does her surfing at work...I don't remember seeing a computer in her apt...

She clearly has some sort of mental issues that are making her do what she does. It's not right. I understand trying to save money, but she's just beyond that!

There's so many different food banks in my area and I'm sure she has access to 10x that. There's even food trucks that hand out hot dinners to homeless, I'm surprised she hasn't figured that out too.

Not all food banks work the same. Some just want to make sure you live nearby, others it's a first come first serve. I know my aunt, who is also very cheap and doesn't need a food by at all loves to go to them. Her favorite is one you have to pay $5 to get in and then you basically come out with a couple hundred dollars worth of food.

I know of some people who worked at some before and how annoyed they get when people come in who can afford designer clothes, iphone, expensive hair and nail treatments and then getting free food. There was one man who would show up in a Mercedes. Someone yelled at him once but he was back next week.

I'm guessing there's something going on mentally with her. She probably has millions in the bank and yet her condo is furnished with things she finds in dumpsters and she lives off food she finds in trash. She doesn't appear to have any friends or relationship which it would be easy for her being so young, pretty and educated.
