Dreadlocks hat?

There was a contestant named Liz on the latest season. All of a sudden she put on a sort of dreadlocks "hat." It's like a wig composed of short dreads. What is this? I mean, she is a black woman, and sometimes black women don't care for their natural hair so they wear a wig of a *different* type of hair. Wouldn't these dreads be her natural hair?
