How do they afford everything

I'm not being mean but most don't work they pack up and move to where the Dr is they all have nice cars. I don't anyone driving some old piece of crap. They places they rent or own are always nice. And the surgery who pays for it the show insurance all the aftercare .

Many people have asked that question on here, including myself, and no one seems to know. One of the patients from last season, Bettiejo, sometimes does live chats and people have asked her that and if she was paid to appear, but she said she has a contract with the show and they don't allow her to talk about money or any of those things.

I'm pretty sure the show pays for the surgery and the cars are often times rentals, but I don't know how they can afford to pack up and move to Houston and live there for a year or two when they have no job. I think it was Chad who said he sold his house in Maryland and moved to Houston to be closer to the doctor, but he's the only one that I've seen where they explained how he moved there.

I suspect many of the others are getting SSI benefits that pays for everything but not all of them seem to be getting that.

I've noticed too that a lot of the apartments look the same. I wonder if the company owns some units that they allow them to stay in.

The one where Bettiejo and Josh was staying looked like the same one Christina was living in. It was rather bland government-style housing, which it probably was.

The show probably pays their rent and car lease. The deal is likely structured so they can still collect disability, food stamps etc. A few of them also beg money from family or church. And some use gofundme. And a few do work, so far there's been a tow truck driver, accountant, dispatcher and teacher.

I'll say those are rentals just for show ( and show off ) Most of those people live in trailers or some crapy appartaments , and still with their relatives

reply

I've always wondered that myself.

In every episode, they look like they're living off of disability as they don't appear to work, so they can't be making that much money.

Then they move to Houston and manage to find an apartment that quickly and on top of that get the surgery which, I believe, if not covered by health care, is about $15,000. Maybe less.

I live in Canada and it's covered by our health care but it's a 2 year waiting list for this type of surgery.

If they allow themselves to be the subjects of this show, then I would have to think the producers are funding the cost of surgery at least.

Medicaid will pay for the surgery if you're poor and meet the regular requirements. If you specialize in 600 pound patients, don't count on people having a job and insurance. You need somebody on the staff who works closely with Medicaid because most of these people are using Obamacare.

reply

Medicaid and Obamacare are not the same thing.

In some states they do call it Medicaid Expansion when you sign up for Obamacare except I'm pretty sure you have to have a job to get it.

I did wonder how Ashley could afford to support that entire household on her one income. Although, they didn't say what her job was, but my guess is Doug was getting disability, a second income, and that's how they were able to afford all the food and to support a family of five.

Our tax dollars at work

reply

Is there a problem with that? Getting them healthy so they can support themselves financially is surely less expensive in the long run, as well as a happier outcome for the individuals themselves.

reply

Except that they rarely end up healthy and self-sufficient.

I've noticed that too with a lot of them. Two years later when Christina Phillips had an update after the weight-loss surgery she was still unemployed, even though she was checking out going to a nursing school in her previous episode. They never said why she didn't enroll in school. She was living in her own apartment with a new man and no job.
