If someone lets Marty up in time after that last scene, I wonder if someone will drive him to the store to return those VHS tapes before the late fees kick in.

I remember wondering about this myself. The director really gives no clues in the movie about the fate of the rented tapes. Were they ever even rewound? Hopefully the director's cut commentary will shed more light on it. Or possibly they just left it wide open for a sequel.
shareOh yeah, the tapes came back on time but they complained that the quality was poor. The tapes played fine on the video store VCR so I asked if they adjusted the tracking on their VCR and they claimed they did so I sold them a cleaning tape and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and didn't charge them for not rewinding the tapes. It was a happy Hollywood ending.
