I think he actually sees how corrupt and twisted "our" society is. And he can see it because he once was completely "free" of it, his mind and Soul hasn't been infected with consumerism. ... of course there must be a longing to live where you've lived but I think the his true reason is the fact that he sees the South Korean society as just another madness. That's not advocating the violence or the conditions. But he touches on that when he speaks about the suicides, he says there were no suicides in the camp but there are many suicides here in South Korea. In a way SK society is the opposite extreme, capitalism at it's worst with mindless ads everywhere and people actually all looking the same. There's not that much freedom and choice here all the life has been planned for you. So I personally think this could be a factor in his longing for going back.
