Pills

Why would a nurse, who is assigned to a ward of vegetative patients, have pills on her tray? Most are intubated... So swallowing anything would be out of the question. Ok, there is the small group of "other patients" (the athlete, the burnt train switchman etc) am I incorrect in my thinking that she is limited to caring for the comatose patients only.
