Random thoughts on 56 Up

Sue looks very young and well-preserved compared to Jackie and Lynn. She's gained a lot of weight though since 49 UP.

So glad Lynn has chopped off her long stringy hair. She looks much better with her pixie cut.

Not enough in the Tony segment and just one sentence from his wife? Disappointing as I like Tony the best and I enjoy listening to his wife too.

As usual, too much of sad-sack Neil. I hate to say he gives me the creeps, but he does a bit.

Nick's wife looks as good as she did in 49 UP - a very young-looking American. Very pretty woman. I teared up when Nick teared up at his grandmother's headstone.

Interesting segment on John and his activities in Bulgaria.

I love Andrew and his wife.

Peter's band was interesting and I think he has a very nice voice.

Bruce's life hasn't changed at all and was pretty much as expected.

Symon's son has done very well and he and his wife seem very happy.

Hardly anything about Suzy's life except for chitchat with Nick. (Suzy should get them to put makeup on the discoloring on her face - it's easy to cover up for the camera.)

Paul is the most boring of all to me, but his wife is always fun to listen to. I did enjoy seeing his numerous grandchildren.

Jackie has numerous problems on her plate, as per usual, but she is a strong woman.

I for one liked Lynn's long hair and I hardly think "stringy" is the word for it. However, it's her hair and she has every right to do what she wants with it. For me, one of the elements of suspense until the next installment is, what will she have done with it by then. I won't lose any sleep over it, though.

As this was the first change she has made to her hair in the last 40 years, I doubt very much that she will make another change.

As I said, I won't lose any sleep over it.

I think the discoloring on Suzy's face is a sunspot. She has them all over her hands too. I guess she's comfortable with it that she didn't want to cover it. I think she looks great.

I'm a bit surprised with Neil. I keep hoping someone gives him a chance. He has not aged very well.

Looks like the recession hit Lynn hard. Like her hair cut. She needed a hair cut. Some women want long hair so they think not cutting their hair makes it longer, it actually makes it looks worse, IE Lynn's hair or they don't have money. It is her hair and she may do whatever she wants to do with it. Her hair cut looks good.

Did anyone else get goosebumps when they watched what happened to the dog track with Tony? Is it still being used since the Olympics is over?

A lot of women retain the hairdo of their youth in the mistaken belief that it makes them look younger. The opposite is true.

reply

Where is it written that one must look younger anyhow? And I'm sick and tired of the idea that long hair is only appropriate for young women! Where's the logic behind that? Any length should be acceptable at any age!

Nobody says it is.

reply

There is a common notion that older women who wear their hair long and do not put it up are not acting their age. I think it goes back to the days when girls were expected to put their hair up when they were eighteen or so.

reply

I must say (and I'm sure you'll all agree) that I rather made a mountain out of a molehill here. Sorry.

reply

Seems like my comments touched a nerve with you, but there is no need to apologize.

reply

You're right, actually. Thanks.

I think how good or bad some of them may look has more to do with what's going on in their lives, what their priorities are and whether the looks they choose suit their sizes and features. I don't think it's a matter of looking old or young, it a matter of the styles suiting them best.

When your style suits you you look more energetic and well put together. That's what makes people think you're younger. You could even see it in the men. Those that had the right clothes and haircuts look more vibrant than those that didn't care so much and wore grandpa clothes.

Why all the emphasis on their physical appearance? That seems to me the LEAST important and interesting development in these individuals' (or anyone's) lives.

You're entitled to your opinion, but don't expect everyone else to feel the same way.

"You're entitled to your opinion, but don't expect everyone else to feel the same way."

Stirchley, I see you are a person who is very generous with your time. Why else would you go to the trouble of pointing out something that my post makes clear I obviously already know (that I'm entitled to my opinion), then ordering me not to do something even though there isn't the slightest hint in what I said that I would do such a thing ("expect everyone else to feel the same way").

Thank you so much, but really, you shouldn't have.

ordering me not to do something

Lordy, you're one of those folks who get very upset when they are told not to do something. Am I right?

reply

I think you're in the minority about Neil. Most people I've talked with find him the most vivid and compelling of them all, the one participant they worry the most about and are most curious to hear the subsequent news on.

I can live with that.

As regards Lynn, as you all may know by this time, I'm sorry to say that she died before this thread even began, in May of 2013! R.I.P. You deserved better!

reply

^What! I never knew that. Do you have a link, by any chance?

Yes. Here is is.

As for the date (May, 2013), I got that from the Wikipedia article on the "Up" series.

Thanks so much; sad news.

A friend and I, when we meet, always begin by saying I'm going to work in Woolworth's.

I know, right? What's her secret? Just good genes, I guess.
