Distant Galaxy..?!


But why would they bother coming all the way here from a distant galaxy?
Why not just invade some relatively nearby planet from all the hundreds of millions of planets in their home galaxy?

Even traveling to earth from our nearest galaxy, the Andromeda galaxy, would require a flight time of an absolute minimum of two and a half million years, presuming they can somehow approach the speed of light.

From a distant galaxy, they probably would have started the flight perhaps 10 billion years ago, way before our sun was even formed.

The expenses involved in such an absurd expedition could never be balanced by the returns expected. It would be like deciding to swim across the Pacific Ocean, in the hope you find a penny on the far shore.

There is no way it could be economically feasible.

Maybe they have technology or knowledge of how to access wormholes, which would be faster than the speed of light. Maybe they've been traveling from galaxy to galaxy, and made their way to ours after millions or billions of years. Maybe their goals are to explore and conquer, and to them "cost" is of no consequence or they don't even comprehend the concept of money. Dealing with an alien intelligence/lifeform/whatever lol, we couldn't know. Being human, of course we put some kind of human agenda or ideas behind what they do.

You're assuming a lot there.
What if they have a means of instantaneous travel? And a two million LY journey would be much quicker for the occupants if they did fly at light speed.

I think Terry was referring to their subjective time. If they were able to meet the staggeringly enormous energy demands of e.g. traveling at 90% the speed of light, they would experience only (approx) a travel time of 1 million years for a two million ly trip.

But that's from M31, the galaxy in Andromeda, our nearest major galaxy. From a "distant" galaxy, it would take 5 BILLION years, subjectively, and 10 billion years in eternal, non-dilated time.

Who would finance such an expedition? Where would they get the funds? What kind of rocket motor can run for billions of years? Where does the fuel come from in inter-galactic space?

If they can already solve those problems, there's nothing they need from us.

It would be 2 of OUR years. But for the occupants-at the speed of light time would appear to stop. Albert said so.

I think you have it backwards. If they are travelling at the speed of light, time is slower for them. More time would pass on Earth.

And I believe if they were 2 million light years from Earth, it would take them 2 million years if they were travelling at the speed of light to get here ---- because 1 light year is how far light (obviously travelling at the speed of light) travels in a year.

Travelling at the speed of light won't make a 2 million light year journey any shorter. A 2 million light year travel time is how fast it takes light to get there.

Now, travel a million times faster than light, then you're talking. That journey would only take 2 years.

yes it will take 2 million years but to the people in the ship only 2 years would have passed. Ofcourse you cant travel at the speed of light only slower otherwise time would stand still and no time would have passed for those on the ship.
