How did Leonardo die?

Great movie from Brazil. It was excellently narrated and I was completely engaged in the story as I also come from a South American country with a rain forest and uncontacted native tribes, Ecuador. Only one question, though. How exactly did Leonardo die? They never explain this in the movie.
