Why Glasgow?

So how do these three English characters end up in Glasgow? Kind of odd. It would have made more sense if the characters were Scottish, OR the film was set in an English city.

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.

Because Stuart Murdoch is a Glaswegian and he wanted to film it there. In a Q & A in NYC he said he had planned for the characters to be Scottish, but really wanted to cast the best for the film, rather than limit himself, so he wound up with non-Scots. The story does explain why Eve, an Australian, like Emily Browning, wound up in Scotland, but for the other two, it isn't needed as there are many English residing there.

I think it is those kind of decisions by Stuart Murdoch that caused the film to end up so badly. The film is constantly being marketed as being set during a Glaswegian Summer. All we have heard from Kickstarter to completion is Glasgow, Glasgow, Glasgow. Yet, in the final film we have Australians, English, French; and the Scottish are only reduced to minor roles of nurses and drunken louts.

I think Scottish actors would have added a charm to the film. The actors he chose weren't particularly good, a visit to a few local universities probably would have unearthed some charming locals who could have pulled it off. I guess he needed established actors like Emily Browning and Hannah Murray for people to pull in the cash though.

Given that they are actors, he could have got them to simply adopt the accent for their characters.

Emily Browning was stunning. She is a naturalistic actor with an amazing voice. For a musical about a prodigy musician, what better choice? You think trawling universities would probably have unearthed someone better than Browning, a one in a million talent?

Seriously, do you know how rare her talent is? Great singers can't act, great actors can't sing. She's closer to one in a billion.

Hannah Murray wasn't a good choice. Her acting was decent, but her singing was poor. Olly Alexander's role was subtle, so he probably could also have been replaced with someone from Glasgow.

But for Emily Browning, no way. There wouldn't be 10 people in Britain that could have pulled off that role, and 9 of them would be the wrong age, gender, etc.

Why bother? The world isn't so provincial. Why is being Scottish so important? There are tens of thousands of Aussies in the UK. People are all over the place, every ethnicity, every nationality. Besides, didn't you notice Browning's accent choice? She used a mixed English/Australian accent, the kind many Aussies develop after living in the UK for a few years. It's a hard thing to pull off, but she has a great ear for accents, another rare talent.

I've been on holiday in Glasgow and I really liked it! Lovely city with a lot of character. I didn't have a lot of contact with the locals though..
The ones I did speak to didn't have the "adorkable" charm of the characters in GHTG, I think I understand what you mean ;) They were more down to earth, no-nonsense type people.

Scotland seems like a really depressing place. Wet and dreary.
Remember Trainspotting?

"It's *beep* being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the fu*king Earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY. We're ruled by effete *beep* It's a *beep* state of affairs to be in, Tommy, and ALL the fresh air in the world won't make any fu*king difference!"

I found it hard to believe that an Australian living in Scotland with no family and no obvious means of support can stay in a psychiatric hospital, rent part of a flat, and then just decide like that to go to uni. Her part time waitress job must pay well, which makes you wonder how she got permission to work.
