holy crap emily browning is a terrible actress

I have friends who have struggled with mental illness, and she missed the mark altogether. the scene where she describes her healing experience was especially uncredible.

there are people who actually take the time to study acting (still, I assume) but browning's a film star. whyever was she cast? unless the intent was to create a musical and forget the more serious undertones, but, if so, why include them in the first place?

I disagree. I've been aware of Emily Browning and her films for over a decade now and I have always thought her to be one of the better actresses of her age. I think the lack of depth was the fault of Stuart Murdoch's more than Emily Browning. I noticed too that mental illness was only touched upon superficially. I felt that Eve came across as selfish and narcissistic in her portrayal of mental illness, which is the last thing those afflicted by it need people to see them as.

Eve recovering from those issues didn't even need to be in the film. I guess Murdoch added them because depression and anorexia are quite 'in' at the moment and they served as a fast-track way of letting people know that Eve was troubled without having to put the groundwork in. I think it back-fired.

I have been following browning too, but am much less impressed. I think that's a comment on the quality of the films which are coming out these days; I mean look how big jennifer lawrence is. I'm sure she's a very nice lady, but, let's face it, she can't act.

I think that perhaps murdoch is an inexperienced director, but as such material is handled so adeptly in his songwriting, I don't think he lacks the capacity to express it. perhaps next time he could cast someone less famous and more talented? I quite liked the actor who played james.

hm what made you consider her as selfish? I think she was supposed to have a strong personality as a foil to james, but I didn't see that as a symptom of mental illness.

What's a comment on the quality of films coming out these days? You thinking Emily Browning and Jennifer Lawrence can't act?

reply

not think, I know. look at anything filmed before 1980 and you'll know see I mean.

reply

No I'm afraid think is the correct term. No one will take your opinion seriously if you state it as a fact. I have seen movies filmed before 1980 believe it or not, but I don't understand your point about watching ANYTHING filmed before then. Are you claiming that there is literally not a single film of poor quality from before 1980?

reply

yeah that's exactly what i'm saying
criticize the brat pack as you will, at least those kids were talented.
i mean, people used to go to school for acting. that appears to be largely a thing of the past, outside various large metropolitan theater scenes.

The direction of the movie isn't an acting choice.

Emily Browning was completely natural in this movie. There wasn't a false note, from her face or her voice.

This movie was a bit muddled and directionless, but as a showcase for Browning's talent, it was amazing. Such a raw musical is perfect for her rare combo of stellar acting and pristine vocals. She puts mainstream entertainers, edited monologue actors and lip synching pop stars, to shame.

As for your idea that mentally ill people wouldn't behave like Eve, that's wrong too. False epiphanies are common among those tortured by mental illness. Many turn to religion in an attempt to escape their psychological demons.

If you read up on the personal history of the film makers, and the inspiration for this movie, you'll see that religion can provide a functional coping mechanism for many gifted but tortured people. Religion is one of the best placebos out there.

don't rush to assumptions, I've been following b&s for over a decade. but I just don't think that browning got it.

I have no problem with the writing, rather the interpretation.

I do hope you're being paid to spread those lies.

The quality of singing in this movie was on par with x-factor rejects sans entertaining humour ... while it's possible to blame the songs, that just further highlights how rubbish the whole film was from top to bottom.

I do wish that people would stop making musicals. It's just so very hard to get the right synergy between the songs, the vocals, the acting and the story.

This sorry attempt fell flat on its face, it was lacklustre all round and those involved in it should be ashamed.

About the only thing we agree on is that religious people are mentally ill.

Emily Browning's vocals were sparkling and evocative. I'm sorry you can't hear it.

Belle & Sebastian are the antithesis of X Factor music.

Well you knew it wasn't going for authenticity pretty quick... Someone with a severe eating disorder that has had the problem for as long as she is supposed to have had it isn't going to look as healthy as she does or have legs with that amount of fat on them when she was doing a couple of the dancing sequences... but lets be honest if you had a girl that had the boney look of a real person with an eating disorder you wouldn't have wanted to watch her because it would have made you feel ill.

*shrug*

I like her. I've liked her seeing her in movies since she was a kid. She did a very nice job in this film.

reply

Well if you don't care what we're arguing about I'm not sure why you felt the need to share your pointless opinion.

reply

Yeah I've never found her to be particularly impressive, she missed the mark here.

To my surprise the hipster guy was a much better actor.

The other girl appeared to be the same as in everything else I've seen her in, with even one of the same character names as before? OK
